ONOPO

ONOPO is a reimagining of an iconic American board game. I attempted to simplify and clarify the game system, removing any thematic metaphors and other non-essential elements. Inspired by abstract strategy games, I designed a minimal iconographic system which uses as little language as possible. [more inside]

Split Decision: a trivia game about decisions, not knowledge

The team I head up just launched an app we've been working on for months. It's called Split Decision: the nonsense vs knowledge game. It's a trivia game where what matters isn’t knowing the answer beforehand, it's choosing right, right now. It’s a nice inversion of what normally matters in quizzes, as the choice mechanic helps get rid of the predestination and futility you can get with Trivial Pursuit et al, and gives the game more pace and fun. Roguelike Radio Interview with Glenn Wichman

Glenn Wichman is one of the three people who made the computer game Rogue, bits of which are visible in roguelikes (of course), many computer RPGs, and MMORPGs. We interviewed him today for the Roguelike Radio podcast.

Zombies, Run! A running game and audio adventure for iOS

We've recently released our first original smartphone game, Zombies, Run! It's a running game and audio adventure for iOS (and soon, Android) where you run in the real world while getting story and instructions through your headphones. As you run, you also get chased by zombies (so you need to speed up) and you automatically collect supplies that you can use to grow your home base, Abel Township. Today, we also launched our free 75 page book, The Runner's Guide, with more background on the world of Zombies, Run! plus the script and audio for Mission 1. [more inside]

Infinimapper - HTML5-based Map Editor

The famous Tiled map editor is a powerful open source application for creating tile-based maps for use in video games, but what happens when we bring that level of versatility to anything that can run a modern browser? Add in the ability to create maps as large as you can imagine, allow editors in the same space to see each others work in real time, and this open source project could help facilitate a level of collaboration previously difficult to achieve. The end goals of this include use as a classroom teaching tool to spark young imaginations and hopefully generate interest in software development through simple games. It's a work in progress, so please feel free to let me know if there's anything you'd like to see.

I made a WWII Shoot 'em Up for Android

A friend and I decided we wanted to get some Android development under our belt. What better way than to make a retro-themed videogame that harkened back to one of the favorites from my youth? Droidius: 1945 is a short, vertical shooter with old-school graphics and a kickin' rad soundtrack to match. Only a daring ace with skills to match can defeat Hitler and the Nazi Menace. Will you deliver victory? Or defeat? It's at your skillful fingertips!

RPGWrite - an inspirational writing tool

RPG Write is a tool to help you beat writer's block, by giving you RPG-style incentives when you write. We've all been there, stuck playing an RPG for a few more minutes, "just until I level." Many of us have been grinding that last bit of XP when we should have been writing! Rather than fight it, we've decided to cave to the compelling nature of RPGs!

FaveRunner: The Video Game Of Missing The Point Of Metafilter

I'm teaching myself the blitting-centric Flash games library Flixel, and my Hello World program sort of got carried away and turned into this silly little platformer in which you try to collect favorites while avoiding the menacing flags. Fifteen levels in three worlds (blue, green, and grey), random fave and flag placement, and, in fine oldschool platformer fashion, compensating for it's shortness by being unfairly hard in spots. Features chiptune snippets of matthewchen is Spamming and Doing the Churlish Pule!

Cryptozookeeper

I spent five years making a graphical text adventure about cryptozoology. I cast actors*, created and photographed cryptids and (leveraging the magic of Creative Commons) listened to hundreds of hours of music until I had a 70-song soundtrack. I visited New Mexico twice to shoot on location and tried to make it as funny as possible -- as if Magnetic Scrolls were coming back any day now. It's called Cryptozookeeper, and while you can buy a two-disc pack, it's also available to download, in whole and for free, for Windows, Linux and OS X. [more inside]

Parliamentarian: the web game of parliamentary democracy

For several months now, my first online game, Parliamentarian, has been in a playable testing phase. Even after months of testing, it's still a little rough around the edges, but our small player base seems to enjoy it. The game could use some more players, though, which is why I turn to Metafilter Projects. Vote on bills, stand in elections, and guide your political party and state to dominance in a Dune-like science fiction setting. After signing up, you will have to wait for your state to hold new elections.

Submit a made up video game and I'll make your box art.

Every week, I ask the strangers of the internet to submit the title and short description of a video game that doesn't exist. I'll then draw the box art for someone's pretend game and post the results each Saturday. A semi-dorky blend of lulz-y photoshop practice and a heartfelt love for video games.
