New book - Customers Included

I have finished a book, Customers Included, which explores the question, "Why do companies so often fail to give customers what they want?" The book includes case studies ranging from Apple, Netflix, and Google to African water pumps and Brooklyn's Prospect Park. [more inside]

Design Play Seattle

A lot of conferences are overwhelming, so I'm putting together a gathering for 20 people. It will be next summer in Seattle. Creative folks of all kinds are welcome; we have a lot more than 20 people who have expressed interest but I'm looking for as much of a range as possible. [more inside]

Badly Drawn Videogames using MS Paint

I was bored one day and started sketching out some old computer/video games screen shots in MS Paint. Somebody suggested I put them on a tumblr, which I did, then promptly forgot about it again until now.

Sixty Seconds of Salary

An animated data visualization I designed in association with CNNMoney went live this morning. It shows and compares salaries for different people (Kobe Bryant, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson, a minimum wage worker, a physician, etc), accumulating in real-time for 1 minute. Watch the disparity grow second by second!

PATLAB is an iOS app that generates digital camouflage patterns.

A while ago I became minorly obsessed with the aesthetics of digital camouflage. After some initial failures playing around with photoshop, I started exploring ways to replicate these sorts of patterns algorithmically. This eventually turned into PATLAB, an app that generates a colour palette from a user photograph, and uses that to generate an easily-editable camo pattern. Some examples.

Japanese Woodblock Print Database

A database and visual search engine of over 200,000 Japanese woodblock prints. Starting in the early 1700s and exploding in popularity throughout the 1800s, Japanese woodblock prints depicted the fantastic world of Kabuki actors, courtesans, warriors, and nature. The style of the prints feels particularly modern and vibrant, even today a couple hundred years later. This project aggregates prints from a number of museums, dealers, and auction houses into a single searchable resource. [more inside]

I Bought Ad Space in the DC Metro to Tell Politicians the Harm Their Incessant Rancor is Producing

I'm tired of the spin and the half-truths. While politicians jockey for position and influence, Americans are suffering. I'm taking my Chamomile Tea Party posters to the public! I've rented ad space in Washington, DC's Metro and I've posted the first of two ads on their back-lit signs. [more inside]

Turn all book covers into wallpapers

For the last two weeks I have been creating desktop wallpapers based on book covers. The idea was sparked by a very old reddit post where one user asked why there weren't any high resolution images of book covers. I saw that and figured, "Why not high resolution, wallpaper ready versions of book covers?" And since they didn't exist, I started to make them. [more inside]

Free Book: Wicked Problems: Problems Worth Solving

It feels like our world is spinning out of control. We see poverty, disease, and destruction all around us, and as we search for ways to make sense of the chaos, we're turning to new disciplines for answers and solutions. New, creative innovations are needed, and these new approaches demand different methods and different theories. This book is presented as a handbook for teaching and learning how to design for impact. In it, you'll learn how to apply the process of design to large, wicked problems, and how to gain control over complexity by acting as a social entrepreneur. You'll learn an argument for why design is a powerful agent of change, and you'll read practical methods for engaging with large-scale social problems. [more inside]

Intervals, online time, task and project management software

Intervals is an online app that I've been working on for several years. Our web design and development agency built it, and uses it, to track our time, tasks and projects. Thought I'd share it with other web-savvy types who might find Intervals useful. There is also a lot of great content in the blog as well, where we've been writing about web design and development for several years. Lots of great content there.

Chamomile Tea Party Posters

I had always been interested in the power and intersection of propaganda and graphic design. And World War II was a fertile era for both. So I started to remix old propaganda posters from the era with contemporary messages about the rancor that is prevalent in American political discourse. I have now published 19 of these posters under the moniker of The Chamomile Tea Party. The two most recent posters: Our Latest No Fly Zone and America's 4th Front: War on the Middle Class. Comments always welcomed.

I had screenshots of add to cart buttons, color/size pickers, and checkout forms but I had no where to share them. The Highlights

The Highlights is an online arts journal from Brooklyn, NY. Beginning as a response to the journalistic bent in art reviews, the publication was created to give artists an outlet to engage in unconventional criticism. Since that time, we have enlarged the format to include experimental text and digital media projects. These works are an extension of the artists’ own practice and consist of image-based essays, original videos, interviews, as well as fictional, virtual, biographic, and diaristic writing. All completed projects are stored permanently in the online archive where they are available for browsing. [more inside]
