A song (and music video) about a satellite

I first got interested in music many years ago and played in a band but never quite learned how to write songs. I spent a lot of time learning theory but still never quite understood how to apply it but then I gradually just started writing as much as I could over the last year or two. This is my first song I've ever released and I really had to stretch to do everything! The song and production are mine but the hand printed animation is done by an artist friend of mine. Ha-Ha-Haunted House... of Comedy

Gothtober is an annual Halloween "advent calendar" with a different participant providing media or digital art for each day. My contribution dropped today, Gothtober 24 (there's no way for me to link directly to my piece, you have to scroll down and tap /click "24"). It's a silly animation of classic monsters performing at a comedy open mic night. Totally SFW. [more inside]

Violent Penguin (Series One)

Violent Penguin was a shortlived educational European children's cartoon from the recent past (although the country of origin and original date of broadcast are unknown). Long thought lost, the complete first series has recently re-surfaced on youtube. Created by the popular children's author (and multi-instrumentalist) Toby Vok (best known for the children's classic Spiders Are Wonderful), Violent Penguin ran for seven very similar episodes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), in which the papercraft penguin interacted with plasticine people and taught them all various lessons in less than 30 seconds an episode. Alongside the seven episodes, there are two helpful compilation videos: The Complete Violent Penguin (all seven episodes all in a row), and The Concurrent Violent Penguin (all seven episodes all at once). The Lifecycle Of A Singular Organism (and other short animations)

I've recently been trying to make a short piece of animation a day. Most are under a minute, but a few are a little longer. The Lifecycle Of A Singular Organism (stopmotion, 3m3s); Who Of Ourselves Should Be Ashamed (stopmotion, 58 seconds); Risk Reward (stopmotion, 1m8s); A Circle And A Square (text animation, 30 seconds); The Collusion Of Artifice (stopmotion, 41 seconds); Manipulations of Perspective (stopmotion, 1m13s). There's also (many more) inside: [more inside]

THINK THUNK | Drawing + Music Animation

The drawing program that I use automatically records my strokes and spits out a time-lapse video at the end. My composer friend asked me to do a drawing set to one of his songs. So I came up with different line styles and onomatopoeic words to represent the different movements in the song, and roughly timed out my blocks of drawing activity so that we'd be able to (somewhat) sync up the resulting video with the music. More of my drawings here. More of my friend's music here.

Find out what's #TRENTing from a brash cartoon character

Short comedy video series: Trent is a sort of Max Headroom for the social media era — but only sort of. He lives inside the matrix, telling you what's #TRENTing, in a brash style — mixing a Scandinavian accent with a Brooklyn attitude. In this episode, Trent weighs in on the Ghost in the Shell controversy, the Vice President's rule about dining alone with women, and your search history being up for sale. WARNING: "Mature" language. Nebula One, a cartoon set in space

I've created a fun and hopefully good-looking new animated series set in space. There are three short episodes, and they're all in one video. Later episodes — assuming I'll have the time and inclination to keep going — will reveal that the mission for these astronauts is establishing a sports franchise in space, for television. But for now, dodging space rocks and worrying about avatars takes up most of their time. Enjoy! [more inside]

Is the Future Already Set?

We think the past is immutable and the future is yet to be written. But is that an illusion? Einstein's special relativity suggests that it is, as I explain in this short animated video produced in collaboration with BBC Earth.

Girl With Pearl Earring

I worked on a video for Ted Ed, the educational branch of TED Talks. It’s about the Dutch Renaissance painter Jan Vermeer, and specifically, his painting The Girl with a Pearl Earring. It was created with frame by frame animation under the camera, some paint on glass animation, some Photoshop animation, and a lot of After Effects compositing. This blog post has a link to the video, stills, and behind the scenes shots.

I built a multi-plane animation stand

I’m really happy to finally finish a new multi-plane animation stand set up after two weeks of building, visiting hard ware stores, hunting for fabric and transporting heavy glass in a suitcase by bus. Link includes a time lapse video showing the building process, followed by detail shots with more information and a test shot inspired by Blade Runner.

I am very happy to announce that the music video I was slaving away over in February and March has just come out! Made for The Animators, out of Melbourne, it features a chase through the snow, some magical realism, a very cute animal, and a whole lot of painted plastic cut-outs. I have some stills and 'making of' pictures on my blog.

Loop GIF inspired by The Shining

This animated GIF was created for the Loopdeloop competition, based in Australia. Each month there is a different theme, and this month’s was….sisters. I immediately thought of two sisters and two hotels: the twins from The Shining, perhaps the most sinister sisters of all, who live in the movie’s Overlook Hotel, but also the Hotel Budapest, shaped like a cylinder and with more than a little Overlook-creepiness to it.

animation marathon segment

A few months ago I took part in an animation marathon as part of the Fete de L’Anim in Lille and Tourcoing. Myself and two classmates from St Joost created 10 seconds of animation in two days. It was super fun and you can watch our segment here, and the whole compilation here. BUNK - a rock video for Nardwuar + the Evaporators

BUNK is a rock-video I recently directed, produced and helped animate for a fellow known as Nardwuar The Human Serviette (who the world really should have heard of by now). His band is called the Evaporators and their sound is best thought of as Ramones-ish old-school punk by way of Saturday morning cartoons ... hence the old-school cut + paste non-digital (for the most part) animation. 94 Elements - Our lives through the lens of the elements

94 Elements is a global filmmaking project based around the 94 naturally occurring elements, from Hydrogen to Plutonium. Award-winning and upcoming filmmakers each take one element as the basis for a human story around how it's used - watch the 2 minute trailer here and you can see the first film now on the project website. There are opportunities for upcoming filmmakers to win commissions to make new films for the project, such as this pitch at the Sheffield DocFest in June, and we've got great plans for some really interesting data-vis work around how we use our resources.
