The Prepaid Economy: African edition began as a means to track notes on the rise of Africa as an investment opportunity back in January 2010. Today it has over 28,000 readers on Tumblr, engaging an audience of young Afropolitans. We will be beginning a new series of discussion posts where engagement from our readers is encouraged. This Friday (25th January) we will be having our very first moderated conversation and the topic at hand will be “China’s presence in Africa.” If there are any particular article links or thoughts that you would like to see addressed in the discussion, feel free to share them and we’ll be sure to integrate them into the post. We look forward to hearing your input and hosting a productive conversation on the effects of China’s presence in Africa. Your moderator will be Beulah Osueke, currently Masters Degree student at LaSalle University, Philadelphia
There's a new retrofuture in town. And a new tumblr devoted to collecting the pink-and-purple lasers-and-smoke pop aesthetic. Visit for all your low-res cyberspace, VHS distortion and pixelated neon cityscape needs, today!
I was elected justice of the peace in my small town in Vermont. I'm not official until February. I started a post-a-day blog about what's involved in being a Justice of the Peace, weddings, JP history, that sort of thing.
A friend and I are working through the Josh Whedon TV series Firefly and translating the Chinese phrases in each episode. We post video clips from the show and audio clips of us pronouncing the phrases along with our non-expert analysis of the word usage. We've posted everything from the pilot ("Serenity") and we're now working on episode 2 ("The Train Job"). Hopefully we'll finish up in the next month or so but I figured we mind as well share now as folks all over are already celebrating the show's tenth year anniversary.
Over the summer I picked up a 35mm camera that takes four images in sequence on a single frame. Naturally, the next step was turning the best (or at least the most interesting) of those images into very brief, rather rough, animated gifs. I publish these gifs on my blog, Animated Jimfs.
I've got a box full of old stuff. Let's have a look at it!
My interviewing website, called Conversus, is a place where people can tell any story they want. My experience interviewing includes as a radio, television, print reporter and as well as a freelance videographer and writer, and through my work as a public affairs officer. Because I have talked to hundreds of people during my career (maybe thousands), I have a good sense for what motivates people to share, namely asking a simple question and then, listening. I have had many five minute conversations with strangers who's stories could've been made into indie film sagas, only to have them disappear never to be seen again. I think these interactions are the stuff that fuel us and give us empathy for each other. [more inside]
My girlfriend has a strange synesthetic reaction to celebrities' faces. We are collecting them for posterity.
1990s video game magazines are (rightfully, perhaps) remembered with little more than ridicule. But those of us who grew up with them still love their overly aggressive, poorly layed-out and sometimes puerile charm. Tune in for
erudite commentary hilarious one-liners, found vaporware footage and more!
Stereoscopic wiggle GIFs from Mars Rover imagery. [more inside]
Images which misattribute pop-culture quotes and song lyrics to famous historical figures. Because I am easily amused.
Photos, mostly of LA, mostly with a Holga.
For those lovers of Lost, who are also lovers of Game of Thrones, and who by luck are also lovers of single-serving Tumblr blogs in which text is placed on top of pictures in amusing ways. [more inside]
I stay in a lot of hotels for work, and have become fascinated with the bizzarre carpet patterns often found in the hallways. I have collected them here for your viewing pleasure.
Tulpendiebe is the companion tumblr for my novel Kino, dedicated to Weimar Republic art, people, music, and events -- especially German silent film, along with anything related to the world of the book (which I mentioned here before.) And because copyright, piracy, and remixing are among the themes of Kino, I am inviting anyone to participate and send their own artwork, music, photos, and writing inspired by the tumblr. You can see submissions so far here.
[Citation Needed] - The Best of Wikipedia's Worst Writing is a collection of some of our all-time favorite entries from the blog of the same name. It has over two hundred examples of so bad it's funny Wikipedia writing with commentary from me and Josh Fruhlinger (from the Comics Curmudgeon blog.) And best of all, it's free for the Kindle for the next few days!
My novel Kino will be published by Atticus Books on Tuesday. It's about a German silent film director whose movies are believed lost during World War II -- until his granddaughter receives a print of his 1927 debut The Tulip Thief under mysterious circumstances... [more inside]
A site that collects links from around the Web showing the intellectual and cultural decline of the GOP.
Chinese words like foot fetish, Islam, and march are or were blocked on Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. For two months last year, I used a Ruby script to uncover about a thousand of these blocked words. I've posted some of them on a website I created with short little entries on why they are blocked. Listen to and submit personal renditions of memorable video game themes. I've had some contributions by the fine people at Mefight Club. You can submit something elaborate [this version of the SMB3 airship theme] or simple [Contra, Stage 1]. [more inside]
Meme Pool is a Tumblr blog that "evolves" new posts. Genotypes are post tags, phenotypes are Creative Commons images from Flickr, and mutations are introduced by the blog's followers. I wrote it in Python. Here's a more detailed description.
This is a Tumblr I started which goes behind the scenes of my office. (I work at a public radio show in Philadelphia.) I try to post stuff about upcoming guests as well as posts that fit in with the aesthetic of the show. I have a lot of fun with it and thought I'd share it with Metafilter. (There's a lot of behind the scenes stuff about public radio.)
Mapstalgia is a new blog collecting people's drawn-from-memory maps of video game worlds and levels. A single-serving tumblog (because the world needs more of those) that follows the odd trend of ESPN and other sports networks showing pictures of sad-looking girls as filler whenever the home team is losing. It's not high art or anything, but it's fun. I do the caption writing and theme designing, the sad girls are either my captures or from elsewhere on the internet. My brother daniel striped tiger also occasionally contributes on captions.

Sex and Paradoxes is a new tumblr I've started. It's pretty much exactly what it says it is. NSFW!
Dedicated to finding and sharing everything that wasn't intended to be creepy, but which nonetheless creeps.
I made an IRC bot for #mefi on Slashnet. It's written in Python, is multithreaded, has a robust plugin system, and supports interacting with Twitter and Tumblr via plugins.
My attempt to turn some of the existing LOLHIPSTERS sites on their ear by way of deconstruction. At least, that's the highbrow explanation. At the very least, I want to satirize the mocking of my hipster brethren around the world.
Tumblelog of dreamlike snippets with the help of Globe Genie and Google Streetview. Currently doing European scenes, will branch out as more of the world becomes visible.
User submitted anonymous stories about funny, unusual, or just plain bad job interviews. [more inside]
As a result of life getting in the way, I've really let my writing lapse in the past few years. I'm finally working on a bigger project now, and I wanted a separate venue to write short, unrelated vignettes as a way of flexing my writing muscles and getting back in the habit of putting something down on paper every day. This Tumblr is that venue.
I'm borrowing terrapin's cassette deck so that I can digitize all my old cassette tapes. Among them are various mixtapes, as well as cassettes chock full of songs I taped off the airwaves in Boston in the early 1980's (probably while doing my homework). Here's where I share my tapes with you -- and I invite you to share your old cassette tapes with me, before they deteriorate or that little fuzzy nubbin falls off the cassette. I have about forty of my own tapes to go. Hope you enjoy my first foray into Projects!

I've been wanting to do a photo essay of drivers that sit too close to the steering wheel for over a decade. When I finally got around to rigging something up, the moments of serendipity were way too fun to limit the project to such a narrow theme. I give you Passenger Window. [more inside]
A tumblr featuring meditations on contemplative living written or inspired by 20th century Catholic monk Thomas Merton. About half of the blog's content are Merton quotes, and the other half are similarly-themed short posts or links to content on monasticism or contemplation from a variety of religious traditions. Theme by MeFi's own Rory Marinich.
