Money Boss
Ten years ago in this space, I announced my new money blog called Get Rich Slowly. With your support, that blog grew into a business and a career. Now I've launched a new money blog called Money Boss, which covers "advanced personal finance". Money Boss is about achieving early retirement and financial independence, about mastering your money -- and your life. Because it's great to get rich slowly, but I believe you can do better!

What Your Facebook Birthday Wish Says About You
Building on the groundbreaking research of Virginia Heffernan, I have finally, after months of tireless research, completed my exhaustive taxonomy of Facebook birthday wishes. Published in the "Daily Shouts" section of the academic Journal of Upper East Side Sociology (aka "The New Yorker").

Knock knock jokes via autocomplete
This bot creates knock knock jokes by hitting up autocomplete on Google. This is perhaps the dumbest bot of all time. And yet! I am compelled to share amazing jokes like these.

Calvin and Markov
Calvin and Markov digests Calvin and Hobbes strips and generates endless new comics with random, semi-coherent dialogue using Markov chains. Here's some details about how I built it.

Librarian of Progress
James Billington, longtime Librarian of Congress, is retiring. This is a job opening that only comes around every few decades and is incredibly important. I made a little website to help share useful information about why it's important and what librarians care about.

Passport to Vermont Libraries
We're doing a program to complement summer reading in the Vermont, the Passport to Vermont Libraries. The Vermont Library Association designed a passport and made 1000 of them to give to patrons at participating libraries. Vermont has about 200 libraries (if you count publics and academics and others) and almost 100 of them signed up. You all helped me get started!

The Big Lebowskemoji
My attempt to emoji-ify the entire Big Lebowski movie. Now, all images (to ensure browser support), and at Medium, fully explained line-by-line below.

Genetic Football
You got your football simulator in my evolutionary model! No, YOU got your genetic algorithms in MY incredibly realistic football simulator! Which is to say: Genetic Football applies the ideas of natural selection to some very, very dumb simulated football players and lets you try and evolve the league over time.

Irish-American Dining
Just in time for St. Paddy's Day, an ongoing project looking at food that is explicitly Irish-American. With recipes!

Drinking My Way Through the Literary 1930's
I have been reading and reviewing drinks from the 1935 recipe book, So Red the Nose, along with the books they are based on.

Play-by-Twitter 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
I am going to attempt to run an AD&D campaign played over Twitter. The project is currently in the planning/incubating/looking-for-players phase.

Endless Jingling
Endless Jingling: an elf singing randomly generated holiday music, forever and ever. Reload for a new combination of carols. Spiff up and/or ruin holiday parties as needed.

Wiggling Hands
This is me both trying my hand at the "Whiteboard Explainer" genre of video, and making fun of its ubiquity.

Underviewed: Searching YouTube Using Default Video File Names
Most every camera or mobile device uses some kind of default naming convention (iPhone: IMG_1234.MOV, GoPro: GOPR1234.MP4). This site searches YouTube for those default file names, and serves up videos that have a low number of views. Because these videos still retain their default file names as titles, it's unlikely that they've shown up in any searches. And it's very likely these videos haven't been seen by all that many people.

Egress Methods
Paul Simon claimed that there must be fifty ways to leave your lover, but in his famous song he named far fewer than that. Egress Methods, a twitter bot, fulfills the promise that Mr. Simon could not—and then some—tweeting a randomly generated formula for lover-leaving every few hours, from now into eternity.

Steller - Story telling app.
An iPhone app that lets you make stories out of photos, videos and text, and then publish it and share it. And you can read other peoples stories.

Back Again?
I wrote a Chrome extension that tells you how many times you've visited the page you're on, right in the button by the URL. Clicking the button gives you a graph showing how many times you've visited the page in the last week.

A Better Wayback Machine
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine, an archive of historical web pages dating back to 1996, has been greatly improved. The index is now updated every hour, there is a new front page, a new Availability API, a 404 handler that webmasters can use, and many other improvements. I think the most important new feature is the ability to instantly save a page and receive a permanent URL for use in citations.
