8+ Years of Painting Slideshow

Since about 2014 I have been trying to learn to paint, specifically with acrylics. If you ever wondered what an 8+ year timeline of paintings might look like, the good and the bad and the very bad, the steps forward and the steps backward, then I have made one of those. [more inside]

Flowers, vase and petals

This is a painting I commissioned from a local artist. I've had this idea / image in my mind for several years, it started with a rose being handed to me as a new student somewhere, a table and a boring lecture... I ended up separating every petal from the flower and arranging the petals into perfectly even rows. It means a lot to me, but I think the most important attribute of an art work is what it makes the observer think or feel.

The Rocinante, my hand-painted ship model from The Expanse

I wanted to gift my partner a scale model of the Rocinante, the ship of the primary crew on the show/in the books of The Expanse. So I found a 3D printer who could print the ship (credited inside) and I meticulously painted the ship with every detail using reference images and stills from the show, using the Season 4 red/black/grey design. Antarctic survival manual: art for the pandemic and other disasters

During the pandemic I finally stuck most of my art into a website. I make my living as a scientist and medical specialist, so despite having some gallery representation and sales over the years I haven't had the time or energy to self-promote. But I would like to share the series called "Postcards from the Hedge" (stolen poems for survival and healing). There are times in many artists' lives in which they develop a temporarily strained relationship with their preferred medium, which in my case is paint. This set of 50 small 4"x6" collage postcards are my response to a recent paint-problematic episode in my own life, which has coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and a dramatic reduction in physical studio space. Art by Josh Millard

I've been making a lot of art over the last four years—oil painting, watercolor, stained glass, linocut blockprints, recently plotter drawings as well—and I've updated and revamped my art site to collect and organize the bulk of that existing work to be a central depot for ongoing work. Shtacks: Type a painting

I doodle on my iPad during my train commute. I finished painting the alphabet. So I made a site where you can type with paintings. Type in the grey text box to get an image. The image is resized to fit your browser window. On desktop browsers you can download the image as a PNG. Anything you type is appended to the URL, the back button works, and you can share the link with your image. Like this. [more inside]

Art by Josh Millard

I've been painting a lot lately, exploring in particular mathematical themes and especially variations on the Menger sponge. I'm proud of the progress I've made, and have built a simple site to show off my finished work: Art by Josh Millard.

I've also been writing about art process stuff on my blog, e.g. a step-by-step document of the execution of yesterday's new painting, Five Concentric Wireframe Cubes.

Painting math on the wall

I spent the last few days hand-painting a couple of fractal images—a Menger sponge and a Cantor set—on the wall of my home office. This is a writeup of how and why I did it, with some bonus thoughts on the weird nature of the fractal series behind the images.

Fauxtoshop CC: haven't you always thought that photoshop was missing a "rainbow penis" tool?

a student-made painting app in the tradition of Kid Pix: one that embraces chaos, randomness and amateurism instead of pixel perfection. All brushes in this app were created by students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 'New Media Crash Course', Spring 2016 (don't worry, not really NSFW) [more inside]

Tulpendiebe

Tulpendiebe is the companion tumblr for my novel Kino, dedicated to Weimar Republic art, people, music, and events -- especially German silent film, along with anything related to the world of the book (which I mentioned here before.) And because copyright, piracy, and remixing are among the themes of Kino, I am inviting anyone to participate and send their own artwork, music, photos, and writing inspired by the tumblr. You can see submissions so far here.

What our kids made

Our family gets a lot of pleasure from our daughter's artwork, and we initially just wanted to put up a site to show her creations off to extended family and friends. We also wondered what other kids her age were doing, and I could not find anywhere solely devoted to displaying kids' artwork. With that in mind, we created this site as sort of a public refrigerator that everyone's kids' art can hang on. [more inside]
