Random Recipe Project: A YouTube Channel
I've got about 150 cookbooks that I've collected over the last thirty years but in the age of instant recipes on the internet I hardly ever use them anymore. Last fall, despite not really knowing anything about creating good video, or editing even better video, or how to have a successful YouTube channel, I decided to begin a video series of me cooking one randomly selected recipe from my collection. The Real Problem With the New Dungeons and Dragons License is Capitalism
I made this YouTube video because I think the controversy around the new OGL is a great moment to really look at how capitalism attacks the commons and how collective resistance is a path to create economic democracy. Plus it seemed like a great chance to spread some communist propaganda to nerds!
Thirteen Witchy Ways of Looking at the James Webb Space Telescope (Part One)
This is my second video essay for YouTube, an exploration of the James Webb Space Telescope from a nature-based spiritual perspective and, more broadly, how science and scientific discoveries inform such a perspective. I researched, wrote, performed and edited this video (so much video editing). Thanks for watching!

Guess the AI Jukebox artist
AI Jukebox is a fascinating project from OpenAI that uses cutting-edge neural neworks to perform all sorts of musical magic -- it can take a clip of a song and continue it in a new way, sing text lyrics in any artist's voice, make a song sound like it's being sung by someone else. My favorite? Tell it to generate music by an artist without any other info, and it will produce a gibberish song with nonsense lyrics... that still sounds 100% real and just like the actual singer or band with their unique style.
You can hear instruments, melodies, sometimes an audience, the breathing of the lead singer -- but the whole thing is generated completely from scratch by the AI, not with samples or digital sounds. It's not flawless -- some of the songs ramble, with glitchy effects or a mutating voice. But these just add to the vibe, like it's from a dream or a parallel universe.
I went through their database to find the best examples of these tracks from the most famous artists, then turned them into an audio quiz on Sporcle -- complete with AI-generated art of the artists I made to serve as hints in the second round. How many of the artists can you name? [more inside]

Violent Penguin (Series One)
Violent Penguin was a shortlived educational European children's cartoon from the recent past (although the country of origin and original date of broadcast are unknown). Long thought lost, the complete first series has recently re-surfaced on youtube. Created by the popular children's author (and multi-instrumentalist) Toby Vok (best known for the children's classic Spiders Are Wonderful), Violent Penguin ran for seven very similar episodes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), in which the papercraft penguin interacted with plasticine people and taught them all various lessons in less than 30 seconds an episode. Alongside the seven episodes, there are two helpful compilation videos: The Complete Violent Penguin (all seven episodes all in a row), and The Concurrent Violent Penguin (all seven episodes all at once). Workshop 88 Maker Meetings - Remote Makerspace in a pandemic
When the pandemic closed our makerspace to public events, most of our members were also not comfortable meeting in person with each other. It took a while to hit our groove, but we've recorded many great conversations related to 3D printing, electronics, home automation, and all sorts of DIY crafts, tools, and projects. We're always looking for more people to join our community, but just having the YouTube channel has helped us stay creative and together as a community.

Two old AF baby ARMYs unbox their first BTS light bombs & wax philosophical
Pirate-Bartender-Zombie-Monkey and I made a video about how we went from "vaguely aware that BTS exists" three months ago, to "unboxing our official BTS light bombs and setting the alarm to wake up at 4AM on December 31 for the Big Hit Entertainment 2021 New Year's Eve concert". Along the way we talked about a number of things, including music, culture, history, mental health, and more.

Experience Vermont as a local, through interviews and tours
We want to introduce folks to the amazing artists and craftspeople that call Vermont home, and I’ve been interviewing them in a new YouTube series. I (and sometimes terrapin) also share a weekly tip or recipe from our own craft hobbies, primarily brewing, cooking, knitting, and dyeing. This week’s videos feature an interview with MeFi’s own Jessamyn West, and her tutorial on making your own mossarium. [more inside]

SciBookChat
I've been making some videos about science and books. They're not reviews of science books, but more discussions of things related to how science and scientists are presented in books. For example, in what I retroactively called "season 1" I looked at parody science books. I'm now in "season 2", where there'll be a new episode every two weeks until the end of the year. The first one of the season involved a bookshop tour to discuss different types of non-fiction books, and the next one (November 3) will be about how the representation of scientists in fiction has changed over the years. Specifically: how and why is Frankenstein different from The Martian's Mark Watney?
Doctor Who Fan Orchestra
I'm one of hundreds of musicians and singers who are part of the "Doctor Who Fan Orchestra", a virtual orchestra where each person records their own parts. Everything is organised and assembled by Stephen Willis, who deserves most of the credit, aided by a small group of volunteers. The rest of us just make music. Linked is our latest piece ("Donna's Suite"), but there are nine previous ones to listen to. [more inside]

“Can’t Feel Your Pulse”
A medical school music video parody of "Can't Feel My Face" by The Weeknd. (These parody music videos are a thing at med schools right now, and mine is no exception.) Simultaneously kept me sane and drove me crazy while I was learning cardiology over the past few weeks. The lyrics are in the video description on the youtube page. If you have any familiarity with med school, pay attention to the details on screens and whiteboards in the video for additional jokes.

House minus dialogue
I cut all of the dialogue out of an episode (S1E11, "Detox") of House M.D. just to see what would be left. Answer: only about 14 minutes of running time, a reasonably coherent storyline thanks to some good blocking and visual direction, a lot of exasperated reaction shots, and a few long uncut segments where wordlessness was the point of the originally-aired sequence. Global Voices - News About Japan
Since September 2014 I have contributed stories about Japan as Global Voices' Japan Editor. I report on what Japanese people are actually saying about the news on Twitter, in blogs, and on 2chan (somewhat similar to Reddit). Often I can find eyewitness accounts (in Japanese) to what's happening in the news, sometimes even scooping Western news outlets. It's all about presenting an authentic, slightly quirky take on current events in Japan.

Underviewed: Searching YouTube Using Default Video File Names
Most every camera or mobile device uses some kind of default naming convention (iPhone: IMG_1234.MOV, GoPro: GOPR1234.MP4). This site searches YouTube for those default file names, and serves up videos that have a low number of views. Because these videos still retain their default file names as titles, it's unlikely that they've shown up in any searches. And it's very likely these videos haven't been seen by all that many people. Concentrated weirdness, painstakingly curated to move fast and be completely inexplicable. Best experienced on Shuffle, and in small doses. Conversus
My interviewing website, called Conversus, is a place where people can tell any story they want. My experience interviewing includes as a radio, television, print reporter and as well as a freelance videographer and writer, and through my work as a public affairs officer. Because I have talked to hundreds of people during my career (maybe thousands), I have a good sense for what motivates people to share, namely asking a simple question and then, listening. I have had many five minute conversations with strangers who's stories could've been made into indie film sagas, only to have them disappear never to be seen again. I think these interactions are the stuff that fuel us and give us empathy for each other. [more inside]

...And The Only Prescription is More Sleighbell
My girlfriend was complaining that some of the music we'd been listening to lately wasn't Christmas music. So I devised a simple formula to make any song into a Christmas song: 1) Take any song, 2) Overlay a track of sleighbells, 3) Enjoy a newfound Christmas classic. [more inside]
The Aubscast: Exploring a Minecraft Advent Calendar with Aubrey
After Thanksgiving, my seven year old daughter asked me to find a Minecraft texture pack with a Christmas theme so she could explore her Minecraft world embelleshed with holiday touches. Well, I found one on the Minecraft forum, but the poster said it was created for an Advent Calendar he was building for inside the Minecraft universe, and to check back later for that. We'll my daughter and I waited patiently and when he finally posted it, we decided to record our adventures going through the advent making a little YouTube video for each of the days as we opened them. Little did we know some of the advent days would take longer than 15 minutes. So the link goes out to a YouTube channel where we've been posting these for the last nine days, but there are more than nine videos so far, primarily due to a little mis-adventure with some explosives.
