The Kilobyte’s Gambit 1k chess game

I adapted an impressive 1.25KB chess engine to remove display code and get it down to 1024 bytes, then created a separate interface using pixel art of The Queen’s Gambit. It won’t win any tournaments, but if you’re a chess novice brace yourself for a challenge. [more inside]

Netflex: Work out while you watch Netflix

I hate working out. I love watching tv. So I joined up with some fellow lazy multitaskers to create Netflex, a free third Chrome extension that pops a guided bodyweight workout in the lower right corner of any Netflix program.

The Many Lives of Ayn Winters: My TV Pilot With Sony PlayStation

In 2017, I was chosen to create and develop an original television pilot as a part of Sony PlayStation's Emerging Filmmaker's Program. I co-wrote the script and even got to spend some time on set. After a year of blood, sweat, and development it is finally out! I'd love for you to take a look.

The X-Men Made Me Gay

An autobiographic comic for The Nib about how early exposure to the 90s X-Men cartoon and subsequent movie gave a confused gay teenager a metaphor to deal with it.

A collection of Doctor Who clips.

For the last few months (and probably for many months more) I've been using vine to make short videos of various entrancing bits from old Doctor Who episodes - including memorable quotes, incredible music, dramatic entrances, utterly terrifying monsters, mystifying machinery, general weirdness, repeated exhortations to obey, charming old computer graphics, horrifying mutations, fist fights, and the just plain odd. And about 200 more. [more inside]

House minus dialogue

I cut all of the dialogue out of an episode (S1E11, "Detox") of House M.D. just to see what would be left. Answer: only about 14 minutes of running time, a reasonably coherent storyline thanks to some good blocking and visual direction, a lot of exasperated reaction shots, and a few long uncut segments where wordlessness was the point of the originally-aired sequence. Film Talk Forum - Smart friendly discussion of the best in Film and Television

I've been looking for a good place for deeper discussion of great films and TV shows. I saw this thread in AskMeFi and checked out the criterion forum, but found it lacking. So I created my own film and TV discussion forum. Please feel free to join and add to the (currently non-existent) conversation. Tell all your film geek friends too. Thanks. :)

Straight Outta Downton

Firefly Chinese (Tumblr)

A friend and I are working through the Josh Whedon TV series Firefly and translating the Chinese phrases in each episode. We post video clips from the show and audio clips of us pronouncing the phrases along with our non-expert analysis of the word usage. We've posted everything from the pilot ("Serenity") and we're now working on episode 2 ("The Train Job"). Hopefully we'll finish up in the next month or so but I figured we mind as well share now as folks all over are already celebrating the show's tenth year anniversary.

Tilting at Werewolves

Looking at Teen Paranormal Romance books, shows, and movies, and particularly at how they present ideas of gender performance and relationship models. (Here's the inaugural post, where I lay out what the plan basically is. Highlights so far include this particularly cogent defense of (at least some aspects of) Twilight, and this epic takedown of Hush, Hush.) And today, we've started a new, 144-week-long project: watching and discussing each and every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. MeFi bonus: named via AskMe (thanks again, argonauta)!

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band Show

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band Show Nominated for “Best Kids’ Band for 2006″ by Time Out NY Kids Nominated for “Best New Band” by Children’s Music Web Awards “Don’t let the wigs and bright clothes fool you: The Dirty Sock Funtime Band is the closest thing to arena rock that the New York kids’ music scene has got. Its hyperactive stage show and loud, anthemlike harmonies come in part from Mike Messer’s theatrical background and from Stephen Jacobs’s love of seminal funksters Parliament-Funkadelic. Says Jacobs, ‘We want to give kids their first rock & roll experience. I had to wait until I saw Prince!’” [more inside]

The IT Crowd game

Somehow, Rob Manuel and I were lucky enough to be entrusted with Graham Linehan's beloved characters, so we've tried to pack the game with references to the show and daft memes. Apologies in advance for the rat song getting stuck in your head...

Redefining the TV remote

I got fed up with buttons, so I've begun to build a different way to interact with a TV using sensors to sense movement - It's only very basic at the moment, you move your hand to change channel and volume. Bit irritating if you move over the sensor by accident so going to use multiple sensors to allow for more complicated gestures

TV Theme Quiz using HTML5 Audio

I occasionally make web-based quizzes for my friend's and co-workers to argue and compete over. They seem to enjoy them, perhaps you will too. How many well-known TV themes can you discern from this jumbled medley? An earlier quiz is also available.
