The Reclaim Pride Coalition (RPC) is a global group of organizations and individuals who are fighting to reclaim the NYC Pride March so that it better represents the LGBTQIATS+ community. Our 2019 March to Commemorate Stonewall's 50th Anniversary and World Pride will be a historic Human Rights and Social Justice march. Yesterday's press release provided key information about the movement and our vision for a 2019 march that lives up to the spirit of Stonewall. We are committed to embracing the strength and diversity of our community, as opposed to corporations, the police, or politicians. [more inside]

I'm a film photographer based in NYC and I finally bit the bullet, scanned a load of negatives, bought a URL + hosting, and put up a website. Mostly black and white (some color), mostly medium format (some 4x5 large format or 35mm), in a couple different genres. I'm working on a project in which I use maps of Brooklyn as the basis of t-shirt designs. My current shirts feature walking paths of Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery, the Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek, and the Coney Island Rail Yard. There'll be a bunch more to come. Oh, and all proceeds will be donated to various relevant nonprofits.

The debut record from Out of System Transfer, a neo-old-timey band who sing punk-influenced folk songs about the assassination of William McKinley, hitting cops in the head with a brick, and riding the subway. Their sound has been compared to the Holy Modal Rounders, Mojo Nixon, and Mischief Brew. With physical media sales becoming less viable, it made little sense to get CDs printed (plus, no one in the band even had a working CD player), but it also felt wrong to forego the great potential offered by album covers and liner notes, not to mention the feeling of having a tangible thing for fans to have. Thus, the record was released as a zine, (also bundled with the download as a pdf) with original artwork commissioned for each song by various Brooklyn-based artists. [more inside]

NYC Advent-ure is a virtual advent calendar of holiday events in NYC. Events are ordered from most to least time sensitive to make planning easier. I thought of it only a few days before December 1st, so this is a minimum viable product, as they say. I'll be rolling out updates and fixes (development, design, and content) during the month. I hope for it to continue next year and plan on setting something up so people in other cities can create their own calendars.

Our research hypothesis is that the character of an urban area is defined not just by the the types of places found there, but also by the people that make it part of their daily life. To explore this idea, we use data from approximately 18 million check-ins collected from the location-based social network foursquare, and apply clustering algorithms to discover the different areas of the city. Ever since 1996, I've been visiting the corner of New York City's Houston Street and Avenue B to photograph the ever-changing murals on the site. In that time, the corner's hosted graffiti memorials to Elisa Izquierdo, Selena Perez, Princess Diana, Celia Cruz and Pope John Paul II. More recently, these have given way to ads for bands like Aventura, Nenes Con Estylo and Lois Aidas. You can find my photographs of all these murals and a few thoughts on the site's changing nature at the link above.
