Bike 808
Still, I wonder what would happen if I duct-taped one of those little cameras to a spoke... I was motivated by sonascope's intriguing comment on my 808 car keys micro camera post, and here's the result: Bike 808. The ultrahip soundtrack is inspired by Trurl's illuminating "Syd Dale, Legend of Library" post from Saturday.

Trexels - Star Trek pixel art
A limited edition print featuring 235 Star Trek characters rendered as pixels, made with the support of Koyama Press. The print debuts at MoCCA this weekend, after which it will be sold online. In the meantime, KP and I are giving away 2 copies to whomever can name the most characters.

DOOM CAKES
This is a blog researching the cinematic tradition in which any beautifully decorated cake serves as a harbinger of imminent catastrophe (often including the destruction of said cake). I also wrote an article about the phenomenon for Random House's film site, Word & Film.

Your servant in the kitchen
I am the latest in a long line of Kenwood Chef owners in my family. This is my blog about learning to live and cook with the Kenwood (and sometimes wondering what was my gran thinking?)

The Life of a Book
I created a slide show to describe how books are made from my perspective as an editor. The slide show is made up of doodles that I drew during several of the many, many meetings an editor goes to each week.

Docvert 4.0 - Word to HTML converter
I announced the previous version back in 2006 and it's progressed quite a lot since then. Docvert 4.0 is a free web service that takes Microsoft Office files and converts them to standards compliant HTML. You can control every single tag and attribute of the conversion with W3C standards. Since 2006 it's now 3× faster because it uses OpenOffice in a server mode, and it's the only Linux based converter that can handle EMF and WMF files, as well as providing unit tests, FTP/WebDAV uploads, and lossless optimisation of images. It's also easy to use, with a simple minimalist interface.

Art Film Ending
Hidden within every movie is a secret art film. It’s easy to find, as long as you know the right place to stop and fade to black. With a little timing and just the right edit... a story of triumph becomes tragedy, love turns to loss, and every dream becomes a dream deferred. Watch the closing scenes from your favorite movies, and see the art film it could have been.

Covertura - The Sincerest Form of Flattery
Covers of songs. Inspired in no small part by all the fantastic posts and questions about covers on the blue and the green, I'm posting one cover every day. Popular posts have been
Bat for Lashes: "I'm on Fire" by Bruce Springsteen
Yann Tiersen: "Life on Mars" by David Bowie
Placebo: "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush.
I would appreciate any opinions, criticism and/or ideas to make it better. Thanks.

iPad two player games... created in JavaScript
I'm developing games for two (or more) players who sit around a single, shared iPad, like in a pub, on the train, or in the living room. All the games are created in JavaScript/ CSS, using the sweet PhoneGap framework. All games are free for now. Videos and screenshots are available on the site... feedback very welcome!

Marlowe the Monster
My current pet project is Marlowe, a sculpted webcomic/picturebook. It follows the life of a well meaning, slightly misguided, slightly shy, rather blobby monster with six eyes and two tentacles. Topics covered include asexual reproduction, (monster) civil rights, depression and lesbian sex(all SFW). Updates Wednesdays.

10 things a week
I meant it--I'm getting rid of 10 things a week, at home and the office, and documenting it all online, in part to keep me honest. I'm three weeks in already.

Diary Dig: Wikileaks Afghan War Diaries explorer
A richly faceted and deeply hyperlinked browser for all of the as-yet released Afghan War Diaries from Wikileaks. Allows you to search by type, category, number of casualties, and many other parameters. Within each document, uncommon phrases that are shared among multiple documents are linked together, allowing you to go down the rabbit hole where you might not have otherwise thought to. My hope is that this will allow reporters, researchers, and the general public to better understand the scope and nature of the US war in Afghanistan, and the contents of this important archive. Source code available.

"The Brothers Buffett" - The Combined Oeuvre of Jimmy Buffett and Warren Buffett
(They're not brothers.) I know squat about music, and jack squat about investing. But I'm taking every Warren Buffett letter (there are 32) and every Jimmy Buffett album (there are 32...kismet) and breaking them down on a weekly basis. And I'm investing $32,000 and writing a song a month to show what I learn. And, in general, being a jackass about it.

Pyramid Solitaire: Ancient Egypt
Pyramid Solitaire: Ancient Egypt is a slick, themed solitaire game that requires logic and planning. It's my most popular solitaire game so far and it's just the right game length for a short break from whatever you are doing.

ThinkStank: Josh Millard's Bad Ideas
I have a lot of ideas. Most of them are pretty questionable, underdeveloped, or poorly-thought-out. ThinkStank is a blog where my ideas go to hang out. I even put some of them in action, like the WTF LOL OMFG flier and Always Be (Snow-)Cloning.

Haiku Finder
This thingy looks for sentences or groups of sentences whose words fall in groups of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. It follows a few simple rules to discard obviously awkward breaks, although it still lets some through. Paste in the text of a book from the Gutenberg project, a transcript of an interview, speech or deposition, or some dry legal document to find the soul within.

This is just to say...
I've been meaning to do this for a while - and have been half intending not to announce it in any way, letting people discover it themselves. But fuck all that, I'm a fame hungry whore and you are my dreadful stage.

Why "Balloon Boy" Never Could Have Been
I've written a very short paper which explains the physics behind helium lifting balloons and why nobody should ever have been worried about "Balloon Boy" Falcon Heene.

Dead Eyes Open: How I Screwed Up The Zombie Revolution
I meant to write a genre-shattering zombie comic. What I actually wrote was an overambitious sprawling mess that started off well and devolved into complete incoherence. Now, with the publisher's permission, I'm blogging the entire run of my comic book Dead Eyes Open, with page-by-page notes and a particular focus on how things went horribly, horribly wrong in the writing process. First page here.
