Avow Weddings
Two photojournalists got together over tea and decided they liked spending quality time with quality people on their wedding day. They liked the idea of documenting true love for the ages. After several months in a pressure cooker, Avow Weddings is the product of that little spark of an idea.

Kickstarter, crowdfunding for people who make stuff.
Kickstarter lets creative people -- journalists, artists, musicians, game developers, entrepreneurs, bloggers -- raise money for their projects by connecting directly with their fans, who receive exclusive access and rewards in exchange for their patronage. Set a fundraising goal, deadline, and a set of rewards for backers. If the goal's reached by the deadline, then everyone's charged and backers get their goodies. If not, nobody's charged. Make stuff, without the upfront risk!

The Town That Won't Stop Burning
A while back the Daily Beast contacted me, asking if I would work with them on a project about Coatesville, PA, a tiny, rough former steel city where 50 arson fires were set over the course of 15 months. This is the resulting article and video. I'm particularly proud of the video, don't skip it.

The Sound of Young America: The TV Pilot
I made this TV version of my public radio show with the good folks at Current. It features interviews with Patton Oswalt (Comedians of Comedy, King of Queens, Ratatouille), Ben Karlin (exec producer/head writer of The Daily Show & Colber) and Maria Bamford. Also: my dog Cocoa.

Social Media Mockery
Some content may be slightly not safe for work, or slightly offensive in a PG-13 sort of way. I'm not even sure what I hope to accomplish with this site. Some time ago I started beating up on marketers on twitter. I don't get them, and I really don't think they get the medium, so I heap abuse on them whenever I can. I know it's a quixotic quest, but I've been having fun doing it. It's also a bit cathartic to to se nd them a "direct message" with the puppypotpie URL in retaliation to their unsolicited DMs.

Where are you in the Movie?
Enter your birthday, your life expectancy, and choose from a list of movies (at the moment Ghostbusters, The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, The Big Lebowski, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and it will show you a frame from the second of the movie you're on.

Librarian Science blog: Cute animals, conservation, library stuff
My first-ever attempt at a blog, and I'm feeling self-conscious about it. I don't know if this is even worth posting to projects, but I've been doing it for a week or so and have posted a lot of things that I find interesting. If you have any interest in libraries, or zoos, or science in general, take a look and pretty pretty please give me some feedback.

Phil Jern Photos
I've created a website to display and, potentially down the road, sell my photography. I'd welcome constructive feedback from any and all of you!

Verminology
A collection of monsters, drawn by fingertip on iPhone using Brushes. Once a day I drag one out from under the bed for you to poke at with a stick. Enjoy.

Me as the Villain
A series of composite photos of various movie and tv villains with my face. I started doing this a while ago, with Stalin and Saddam and used them as avatars on various sites, but I may have lost those to the ether (I didn't upload them to flickr). Doing these was a fun distraction from the usual development that I normally spend my free time on.

Improved BART Logo Shirt
As some may remember from the MeFi threads about a BART police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man in the back (who was face down on the ground and apparently handcuffed), I designed an "improved" BART logo and I've been selling T-shirts. All sale proceeds will be donated to Oscar Grant's family. The shirts can be purchased here. The logo can be downloaded here for use at rallies, protests, marches, etc.--please feel free to distribute it anywhere you see fit.

CEO contributions in the 2008 Presidential Race
I went and mapped each of the Fortune 1000 CEO's contributions to the 2008 presidential candidates. You can view the data by by CEO, by Candidate, or by Industry.

Elevyn
Elevyn (pronounced as "eleven") is a place to buy and sell hand-made items produced by indigenous or marginalized communities. Think of it as an eBay or Etsy with a cause; using web 2.0 tools to connect artisans to the worldwide market.

My beard can lift random objects… and the human spirit.
I’ve been grooming, conditioning, stretching, and toning, and now my beard is finally ready for the big time: starting this Friday and every Friday thereafter, my beard will lift one pound for every hundred dollars raised for Chicago's Off the Street Club, until we raise $5,000 or the hair is violently ripped off my face.

Look At This Cat!
I made Look At This Cat because I figured there are a lot of cats out there that people should look at. And I don't see why that has to involve like crazy Web 2.0 crap when all you really need is some pictures of cats and the ability to say to yourself "hey, look at that, that is one great cat right there".

Oscar Contest 2009
For the seventh year running, I'm hosting an Oscar "Pick 'Em" contest over at my website. Every year the winner receives a custom, one-of-a-kind sock monkey creation. (Previously: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008.) This year the prize is a pair of Batman and Joker sock monkeys. (That Joker monkey is hands-down the most disturbing thing I've ever crafted.) Everybody's welcome to enter!

The Love Meter!
Everybody loves a love meter! The Love Meter is an iPhone/IPod Touch app created by my husband, his programming partner and me, just in time for Valentine's Day. No, I don't program, but I do draw cupids :)
