Oregonians for a State Bank
How can we help the economy? By helping small businesses. Even Ben Bernanke admitted that community banks, not big banks, have stepped up their lending to small businesses since the financial crash. North Dakota has had a solution for this since 1919: it uses its tax reserves to extend lending to community banks. It's been working quite well. There's plenty of evidence that it would work elsewhere. Now, Oregon wants in on the action.

How Fucked Is Muni?
A web app to tell you how broken your favorite San Francisco MTA route is. Right now it's pretty simple, just pulling data from the NextMuni API when it's asked for a specific route, but I plan to revamp it this weekend to have it do periodic polling on each line so I can display stats on the front page. Other improvements in the works: get published schedules so the app will only show lines currently running, adjust the headway thresholds based on scheduled headway, collect stats for each line to rank the most broken lines in the system... got anything else I should do with this?

Chamomile Tea Party Posters
I had always been interested in the power and intersection of propaganda and graphic design. And World War II was a fertile era for both. So I started to remix old propaganda posters from the era with contemporary messages about the rancor that is prevalent in American political discourse. I have now published 19 of these posters under the moniker of The Chamomile Tea Party. The two most recent posters: Our Latest No Fly Zone and America's 4th Front: War on the Middle Class. Comments always welcomed.

Collaborative Jukebox
As promised, I have made available the source code for my Collaborative Jukebox project. This code will run a social website where visitors can upload music from their computer into a shared queue, which is then played in order for everyone at the same time.

Ranting against the War on Women.
I started this website, as you can tell by its URL, as a response to the egregious billboard by Lamar Advertising that hung in Soho very briefly, but continues to hang in other cities around the country. It has morphed into a place where I go nuts, no holds barred, against the War on Women in America.

Examples of Targeted Email Attacks
Blog providing screenshot examples of socially engineered and/or specifically targeted spear-phishing emails, intended to entice the recipient to install trojans and/or malware. These are real emails that my colleagues or I have received, and therefore the examples are generally focused on the China/Taiwan analyst community in Washington, D.C.

Start to Finish, A Metafilter Music Podcast
I've been listening to the songs on Metafilter Music - all the songs! - from the very beginning. On weekday mornings, I'll add a song I like. It's a song of the day podcast. The most popular tags for the music I like so far: electronic, pop, dance, ambient, rock, electronica, synth, techno, instrumental, & indie.

Gamefilter dot net
"So," I asks myself, "self: does the world need a Metafilter-like site dedicated to gaming?" The answer I got back was "Hell, yeah!" and Gamefilter is the result. It's the newest site in the burgeoning network of MefightClub websites, ripped off from inspired by Metafilter and fitting somewhere in between our more chatty private forum and the more long-form Full Glass Empty Clip group blog. You don't need to be a Mefight Club member to join in; registration is open to all.

Space Cannibals
Zoom around the galaxy in a giant farting/vomiting/burping sumo robot, battling (and consuming) vicious space cannibals. It's a daft idea for a Flash game pushed completely over the top with music, animation and a storyline of conflict, betrayal and turbo-charged flatulence.

In Focus - a new news photo blog
A couple of years ago, I announced right here in the green a new Big Picture blog I was starting up. It did very well - so well that I was able to make this into a fulltime job with the Atlantic Magazine, and I'm really happy to announce that my new blog "In Focus" is live as of today, and I would certainly love it if you stopped by or helped spread the word.

Offbeat Eats
Since late 2005, I've been tracking some of the more interesting places I've eaten, mostly so that other travelers can find some of the more obscure places I've enjoyed. The latest effort has been porting the whole thing to wordpress and getting full geotagging working so that you can easily see my places by category and map. Feedback wanted, since I'm trying to make this sight actually useful to people.

The Dow Piano
Stock trades determine the songwriting in this audiovisual presentation, translating the ups and downs of 2010 into musical notes. Using a five-note scale spanning three octaves, pitch is determined by the daily closing numbers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Have you ever wondered "Does Batman's close cooperation with the Gotham police department make him a state actor for Fourth Amendment purposes? Is evidence that he gathers even admissible?" Well, I did.
