Becoming a dad, ready or not
I'm a storyteller and standup comic in NYC, and I just posted this standup act/story about what it was like to have to prepare for my first baby while grieving my own father - and getting some surprise inspiration from my stoner mother-in-law. I'd greatly appreciate your checking it out and sharing it everywhere if you're so moved.
The Potty Training Exit Survey
I'm (just barely) starting to blog about data for families and households. One of the first pieces I want to do is about potty training, and there's some gaps in the existing literature that I'm hoping to address by collecting some data from parents on when and how they did potty training.
If you've potty trained a child *within the past year*, and feel like sharing how it went, I would be most appreciative if you do this 5 minute survey. I'll share the results back here and at littldata.com.
Play Payba¢k
Payba¢k is a game designed to help teens understand the costs of college BEFORE they begin applying.
We made it to address an issue many families face: Kids have no idea how much college actually costs. Parents are super uncomfortable discussing finances with their kids. So too often, nobody talks, kids apply to schools they can't afford, parents stretch themselves too thin and everyone ends up disappointed. [more inside]
Raising Future Adults
A Website About Being A Parent
Daycare & preschool search (San Francisco only)
I have a 2 and 4 year old and am tired of it being so hard to figure out my child care options. So my partner & I researched and indexed 800+ child care providers in SF, including the impossible-to-find in-home daycares. (Other cities are coming, but I started here because I live here.) My Path To Trans Motherhood
"I’m still learning what my kind of motherhood would look like, since I live among institutions and ideologies that continue to question my existence." [more inside]
Lone Wolf and Parenting
Ogami Itto is just a single dad trying to make his way through the world on a quest for vengeance that requires the rejection of human morals. It isn't easy with a young child in tow! This Tumblr highlights the trials and foibles of parenting on the assassin's road. [more inside]
Breastfeeding & pumping helper app for iPhone
I had a baby this year, and we had a LOT of trouble with breastfeeding and pumping. I used basically every baby app I could find and found most to be frustratingly bad. So I made my own, and after 6 months of development (during naps no less) it went up on the App Store today. It works for nursing, pumping, or bottle-feeding moms, and even supports twins/multiples. And it is designed to be used one-handed. [more inside]
Decorated lunch bags for my two kids
For the past year and change, I've been sending my two sons two school with custom lunch bags that I make for them every day that they're at my house (i.e., half of the time). I've painted, drawn, collaged, cut, and stenciled. Sometimes I make an image based on a historical event that happened on that date; sometimes the boys request a particular illustration; and sometimes I just go with my muse. I guess there are a handful of parents doing this in various ways, so it's not the most revolutionary thing ever, but I'm pretty pleased with how a lot of the bags have come out, so I thought I'd share.
A daddy blogger project for children that ask too many questions
Prompted by my own fears of ignorance, I've started a daddy blog devotes to answering difficult questions such as 'how deep is the sea?'. If you have any suggestions for questions, please hit me up.
We Think He Might Be a Boy: Raising a Transgender Child
You may recognize me from my many comments in trans-related MetaFilter threads as both the partner and the parent of transgendered people. I was recently asked to contribute an essay about my five-year-old son's gender history to Friends Journal, a national Quaker magazine. Here it is!
Our First Babysitter
Just in time for Halloween, here's a new comedy improv short that my wife and I made. She stars, and I directed.
New parents get a very special visit from their first babysitter. It's Spooktacular!
Starring Adria Dawn (NCIS, Nip/Tuck) as Raven, and guest starring Joel Stoffer (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and Thanna Vickerman (Ultimate Reality.)
Special Needs Parenting Blog
I've been keeping a blog that details my experiences as a parent of a child with multiple disabilities. In 2012, I started interspersing a series of articles that are a set of simple projects that any parent can do to help their child with Down syndrome (or any child with gross or fine motor issues). Finally, in a bout of craziness, I have signed up to run the Falmouth Road Race in order to raise money for the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress, an organization that has been immeasurably helpful to our family and so many others.
The How Not To Kill Your Baby Official Growth Chart Of Doom
Have you ever read a parenting book that left you feeling inadequate and/or terrified? In other words, have you ever read any parenting book whatsoever? Then you might enjoy my new book How Not To Kill Your Baby, a parody of all those crazy-making pregnancy and parenting manuals. It comes complete with a poster-size detachable Growth Chart of Doom, which will tell you if your baby is big enough to survive an encounter with an angry capybara. For the story of why I decided to write the book, you can read my guest post at the New York Times Motherlode blog. [more inside]
Open Letter To My Kids About Santa Claus
A letter to my grade school kids about transitioning from a belief in Santa Claus to a more mature belief in Santa Claus (from a Christian perspective). Offered as some help to other parents with kids at this stage. [more inside]
Elevator Madness
In our latest improv short, my wife, Adria Dawn and I explore what happens when a pregnant woman gets trapped with a self-proclaimed pregnancy expert. This is a slightly twisted take on how soon-to-be parents really feel sometimes. We hope you enjoy it.
The Good Men Project
“The Good Men Project is a glimpse of what enlightened masculinity might look like in the 21st century,” the press raved when we launched, and that was exactly what we were hoping for. Finally, “a cerebral, new media alternative” to glossy men’s magazines was born. In fact, The Good Men Project is not so much a magazine as a social movement; an ongoing in-depth discussion that has by now involved millions of people, all getting back to a core question of “what does it mean to be a good man in these modern times?”.
