The Potty Training Exit Survey

I'm (just barely) starting to blog about data for families and households. One of the first pieces I want to do is about potty training, and there's some gaps in the existing literature that I'm hoping to address by collecting some data from parents on when and how they did potty training. If you've potty trained a child *within the past year*, and feel like sharing how it went, I would be most appreciative if you do this 5 minute survey. I'll share the results back here and at littldata.com.

Decorated lunch bags for my two kids

For the past year and change, I've been sending my two sons two school with custom lunch bags that I make for them every day that they're at my house (i.e., half of the time). I've painted, drawn, collaged, cut, and stenciled. Sometimes I make an image based on a historical event that happened on that date; sometimes the boys request a particular illustration; and sometimes I just go with my muse. I guess there are a handful of parents doing this in various ways, so it's not the most revolutionary thing ever, but I'm pretty pleased with how a lot of the bags have come out, so I thought I'd share.

Adorable

In 2009, after I turned 56, I fathered my first child. Since all her extended family members live in other countries, I started a daily photo blog, to record her growth.
I love my baby with all my heart. When she was about a year old, we took her to a street fair and a cartoonist drew a quick caricature of her face. That gave me the idea to start collecting artworks based on her pretty self. I guess I went a bit overboard, because yesterday she celebrated her third birthday, and the collection grew to 500 original art works from all over the world. [more inside]

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band Show

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band Show Nominated for “Best Kids’ Band for 2006″ by Time Out NY Kids Nominated for “Best New Band” by Children’s Music Web Awards “Don’t let the wigs and bright clothes fool you: The Dirty Sock Funtime Band is the closest thing to arena rock that the New York kids’ music scene has got. Its hyperactive stage show and loud, anthemlike harmonies come in part from Mike Messer’s theatrical background and from Stephen Jacobs’s love of seminal funksters Parliament-Funkadelic. Says Jacobs, ‘We want to give kids their first rock & roll experience. I had to wait until I saw Prince!’” [more inside]

The Aubscast: Exploring a Minecraft Advent Calendar with Aubrey

After Thanksgiving, my seven year old daughter asked me to find a Minecraft texture pack with a Christmas theme so she could explore her Minecraft world embelleshed with holiday touches. Well, I found one on the Minecraft forum, but the poster said it was created for an Advent Calendar he was building for inside the Minecraft universe, and to check back later for that. We'll my daughter and I waited patiently and when he finally posted it, we decided to record our adventures going through the advent making a little YouTube video for each of the days as we opened them. Little did we know some of the advent days would take longer than 15 minutes. So the link goes out to a YouTube channel where we've been posting these for the last nine days, but there are more than nine videos so far, primarily due to a little mis-adventure with some explosives. What our kids made

Our family gets a lot of pleasure from our daughter's artwork, and we initially just wanted to put up a site to show her creations off to extended family and friends. We also wondered what other kids her age were doing, and I could not find anywhere solely devoted to displaying kids' artwork. With that in mind, we created this site as sort of a public refrigerator that everyone's kids' art can hang on. [more inside]
