Am I Nonbinary?
A short quiz to help you figure out your gender identity. Try the alternate version if the original doesn’t give a definitive answer. [more inside]
Male Tears: A collage comic book about thwarted privilege
A cursed relic of our revolting age, Male Tears remixes vintage comic book imagery into a verbo-visual slurry for your shame or amusement: forty pages of thwarted privilege, humiliating failure and unchecked emotions exploding into weeping and/or violence. [more inside]
Men Say the Darndest Things (NSFW-ish)
I designed and animated this video which curates a cringe-worthy selection of funny and sad (and 100% real) comments left for Instagram models. While I didn't use the actual photos, the drawings of the models are probably NSFW, and the language used is... also interesting.
Beyond the Bathroom
As part of a studio capstone for my master of urban planning program (and in partnership with the non-profit, Hollaback!), six others and I have developed a report entitled "Beyond the Bathroom: gender-inclusive planning for public spaces." [more inside]
Pipeline: a vid critiquing the tech industry
I made a political video remix/fanvid using Taylor Swift's song "Blank Space" to criticize hypocrisy in the tech industry's recruiting narratives. Specifically, I wanted to vivisect the ways the mainstream US software industry tries to attract marginalized people, especially women, into engineering careers, but doesn't take care to keep people who have entered the "pipeline." I montaged visuals from documentaries, movies, TV, comics, coding bootcamp ads, blog posts by tech feminists, and more. I've also posted a detailed making-of essay with links to nearly all of my video and web sources; I used free and open source software. All in all (including learning how to vid), this took about 75 hours to make.
If we liberate male sexuality, the war against women can end
"When a man enters my secret room, he steps into another world, where the taboos, rules and expectations of the outside world are lifted, or bent to serve our mutual pleasure.. [more inside]
Parsing reports on murdered and missing indigenous women
Yesterday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights released its long-awaited report on Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women in BC and the rest of Canada. I live-tweeted my reading of it, along with moderate extra commentary and clarifications.
She Looks Like Sunday Comics: Watching The Brenda Starr movie (1989)
Josh Fruhlinger of the Comics Curmudgeon and I sat down and watched the nearly unreleased Brenda Starr movie adaptation and talk about how it tackles camp, gender performance, romantic fantasy, and crazy shoulder-pads [more inside]
Digital Covers for Over 400 Children's Books
I'm digitizing the covers of a significant portion of my children's book collection and posting them to my Flickr account. Among the items in that collection is a book shaped card game called Dr. Quack which is sort of like Mad Libs. I've parsed out the story and the accompanying cards into a twitter feed just for snicks and giggles. The rest of the books are typically either science books, textbooks, or early examples of cross media licensing based on comic strips, radio shows, TV shows, or movies. [more inside]
Tilting at Werewolves
Looking at Teen Paranormal Romance books, shows, and movies, and particularly at how they present ideas of gender performance and relationship models. (Here's the inaugural post, where I lay out what the plan basically is. Highlights so far include this particularly cogent defense of (at least some aspects of) Twilight, and this epic takedown of Hush, Hush.) And today, we've started a new, 144-week-long project: watching and discussing each and every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. MeFi bonus: named via AskMe (thanks again, argonauta)!
"China Girls / Leader Ladies"
A collection of frame enlargements I made of the mysterious photographs of (usually) women that sometimes appear in the unseen header footage of motion picture film. More will be added as I encounter them. [more inside]
Miss Gender — A Video Podcast About my Transition From One Gender to Another
Miss Gender is a video podcast created by Jay Frosting and me about about my transition from male to female. I’ve been contemplating my gender identity since I was 13 or 14 and, now in my mid-30s, I’ve started to get my head around the reality that I’m transgender. [more inside]
The San Fran Plan
I'm working on a 3-month trip to San Francisco to explore gender, sexuality, love, and relationships via performance from the perspective of a female queer migrant minority. Here I'll be documenting the project, my progress towards it, and how people can support me. If you're in San Francisco give me a yell!
