Motto

a playful ghost story brought to life by the one-of-a-kind way you see the world. Working with friends and Canada's National Film Board, we spent the past three years trying to develop a new vocabulary for a kind of interactive novella and portable treasure hunt. It's a curious adventure about a ghost named September and you can explore all six chapters free on your phone.

xn--qeiaa.ws: Emoji Domain Registration

Domains can be more than just letters and numbers. Most people have no idea they can just type a bunch of hearts in their address bar and go to a domain... and yet, it works!

App search engine that filters out fake reviews

While developing mobile apps, I realized how rife the App Store is with rating/review manipulation. So, I created apprecs.com, a facade for the store that allows you to filter out many of the fake, coerced, or otherwise manipulated reviews. You can also filter by other criteria such as how recently the app was last updated and age/gender of the typical user. What do you think? I'm getting started on adding Android (Google Play) support today. [more inside]

Myanmar's Second Wind

I've had the good luck to have spent a bit of time in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma (and no, please don't ask me why I don't use that word, it's a long story). I work in tech. So, here's a series of stories I'm writing about it. You may or may not have known that in spite of all the incredible challenges the country still faces, there's also – what shall we call it? — a glimmer, of hope? That a lot has changed? That for example, a SIM card cost $2500 a few years ago, and $250 a year back (when I got mine), and now it's $1.50 AND available also to foreigners at the airport when you land? It is an incredible country. I hope you'll get to see a little bit of it through this. I really should update it more (I have about 5 more interviews/profiles lined up).

Airline Icarus — experimental mobile site

I got a commission from Toronto's Soundstreams to make an experimental mobile site inspired by their new opera Airline Icarus. The result uses various fancy javascript video implementations to play around with interactive sound and video on mobile. Best viewed on mobile; it's a heavy site so your mileage / performance may vary.

Just Graph It

A simple app for creating a line graph. It works by entering a number, a date-time is automatically associated with that number when it is entered. Two or more numbers and you got yourself a line graph. Not much more to it, there's the ability to create multiple graphs, and to edit entries, but tt's light weight by design. Note: Requires a modern browser with HTML5. It worked for me on PC (Chrome), Android and iPhone, it should work on everything else. There's a shorter alternate url as well: g.joha.us [more inside]

A Privacy Policy Generator for Mobile Apps

Privacy policies now are actually required across app stores and people are risking fines and being sued for not complying with the COPPA. So iubenda makes it really easy to comply with these requirements. (it's not just California btw. but California makes it clear that any app that is geared towards Californians, falls under their regulation).
Btw. we're always happy receiving feedback through the site, @iubenda or on here as well. :)

Phone/tablet interface for Harvard's digitized special collections

Our default display interface for digitized books and manuscripts uses frames (I know) and worked very poorly on mobile devices. We've just released an interface that autodetects visits from these devices and routes them to an alternative interface that is much more usable, and offers orientation awareness and gesture based page-turning and zooming . To try it, follow this link on your touchscreen device. Try it out, and please leave me any feedback you have about your experience.

MTransit Minneapolis St. Paul Metro Transit App

This is a web application optimized for mobile devices that pulls realtime data from the MetroTransit.org municipal data feed in real time. If you're trying to catch the bus, you can find stations by full-text search, bookmark them and reload the page for live-updates of bus arrivals. It's made with Flask (a Python based web framework and Twitter Bootstrap a CSS framework). MTransit can also locate the closest bus stops to you via a geolocation API available in most browsers. It displays well on tablets, phones and good old browsers. [more inside]

Wanderlust, an experimental mobile storytelling platform

Wanderlust is a new way to tell location-based stories on smartphones from Six to Start. Instead of readers having to be in specific physical locations (like setting a Sherlock Holmes story in Baker Street, London), Wanderlust sets stories in classes of location. Act 1 might be in any cafe in the world, Act 2 in any museum, Act 3 in any bar. It's more like atmosphere-based storytelling. [more inside]

how to keep in touch with the US from South America

I spend a good deal of time in South America and need to keep in touch with work and family, based in the US. Here's some travel communications advice based on what I've learned, most recently from a 4 month stay in Ecuador.
