barrl: gusty winds may exist
I started one of those blogs people have where they write about all the stuff they care about. Topics include, among other things: social justice and feminism, video games (especially Dragon Age) and menstruation. Also, there are jokes.

The Art is Not The Artist: On Holding Abusers Accountable & Enjoying Problematic Media
This is the thought process I go through when I’m considering the creative output of a horrible individual, and the questions I ask myself about whether I can consume the work in good conscience.

Chip64: Chip synth for Reason
Hey there! I make Rack Extensions for Reason, a music-making program from Propellerhead Software. (Rack Extensions are plug-ins for Reason, sort of like VSTs that you'd use for other DAWs.) I've made 10 so far. My latest is Chip64, an emulation of audio chips from vintage computers and video game consoles. There are some audio examples too.

DEFCON: The Documentary is Released
In February of 2012, I was in Helsinki traveling with Rachel Lovinger when I was contacted by long time goon Russ Rogers. His question was simple: since DEFCON was coming up on the 20th anniversary, and I had been both an attendee and director of several technology-based documentaries, would I be interested in doing a documentary on DEFCON and its 20th year? I said I needed to think about it, but I really didn't have to think that long. A year and a half later, I put the finishing touches on a two hour movie and an hour of bonus footage, having spent the previous 18 months planning, shooting, organizing, editing, and just generally living this movie day in and day out. While we weren't able to cover every last aspect of DEFCON (and who really could?) I think you'll find there's something for everyone in the movie. It was done out of love And respect for this incredible event, I hope it brings a whole new appreciation of the special event DEFCON has every year.

Jellytext
Teletext was finally killed off recently in the UK... so I've summoned it from the grave. With this little web app you can make & share teletext-like pages, optionally accompanied by music that will stir memories in anyone who ever watched Pages From Ceefax in the early hours.

Model 100 upgrade
I've designed a new mainboard for the Tandy / RadioShack TRS-80 Model 100, one of the very first tablet computers. The machine turns thirty years old this year and, amazingly, many of them still function! My upgrade replaces the Model 100's 2.4 MHz 80C85 with the more modern 16 MHz AVR AT90USB1286 on a Teensy++ and adds new features like VT100 emulation and the potential to increase the storage from the original by a factor of one million.

18 genuine Victorian gallows ballads recorded by today's musicians
Well, it’s taken me over a year to do it, but I’ve now managed to persuade modern rock, folk and blues musicians to record all 16 of the genuine Victorian gallows ballads which I started researching back in 2011 (Projects previously). You’ll find a Soundcloud set compiling the whole "album" linked above, and details of the individual songs below. Each track is a collaboration across more than 100 years, as singers and bands from Britain, America and Australia add their own music to the original 19th century lyrics. Each track's Soundcloud entry has a link taking you to the true story behind that particular ballad.

Petrified Flowers music video
So I was perusing Ask MeFi one day, and someone asked about fractals. Being a fractalhead, I responded, they sent me the song, I loved it and decided to make them a music video. I used ArtMatic Pro, Studio Artist and FCPX, and this is the result.

MandelPlot, a web-based fractal generator
This web-based application will plot the Mandelbrot set, let you zoom in on different sections and link to them (e.g. here). It requires a recent HTML5-capable browser (Firefox and Chrome both work). Source code is here under an open-source license. The website is entirely static. All processing happens on the browser.

A Month In Music
There are 10,513 MP3s on my hard disk. According to iTunes, that’s nearly 30 days worth of music. It has taken half my life – 15 years – to build this collection but I decided to listen to them all in one go. One continuous concert, playing songs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I wanted to revist all the songs I'd once loved, and the memories and places they called up. The only choice I made was the first track. After that, the computer randomly decided what was going to play. No stopping. No skipping. No changing the volume. Music, all the time, for a whole month. The Month In Music blog charts the progress of the playback project, updated once a day with original writing and photography. So far, it's a couple of days in...
