The secret is the nettles.

The Brexit Twitter Project

When the Chequers Plan came out, I found myself accidentally live-parody tweeting it as an effort to stay sane. It turned out to be an interesting experiment in political satire as a writer. So I decided to try it as a more deliberate creative experiment again this time around. [more inside]

Progressive Alliance

This project's main goal is to elect a progressive majority to the UK's House of Commons at the forthcoming general election. "We won't accept one party rule. We need to vote smart to win. We can overturn our unfair electoral system and build a progressive majority. We've got to put aside the old tribal politics. Join the fight for a Progressive Alliance." [more inside]

Progressive Left for a United Kingdom

<In the wake of the UK's decision to leave the EU, an early general election may very well be called. We on the left-of-centre need to get our act together and build a progressive alliance in order to defeat the forces on the right. This site is an attempt to start to build an information portal to assist in the process. All comments welcome! [more inside]

Electobot: Open-Source UK Election Predictions

Opinion polls are all well and good, but they don't give you much of an idea of what might actually happen in an election (particularly in a multi-party democracy like the UK). Electobot aims to solve that by running thousands of simulated elections in order to work out what might happen if the election were run tomorrow with the polls as they are. In addition to running the simulations, I've also been blogging the results at Electobot: The Blog. [more inside]

Michael Hess: Bingo And Social Club Five Years On

Released in 2010, Michael Hess' book Bingo And Social Club collected together his photographs taken in UK bingo halls. It is a rare social document, little else out there records daily life in the UK's retail halls in the same sort of depth. I contacted Michael to commission him to do a new set of photos for the brand new photography section at the site, charting the differences five years on from when he shot the photos for his book. The result is this collection of striking images, warm character portraits and architectural views, charting the people and places of UK retail bingo in April 2013. It's an eye-catching look inside the normally secretive world of the UK land based clubs, and the first in a series of original photographic shoots arranged as part of the growing archive of retail club material at the site.

Gyms Near You!

I was playing round with Google's Fusion Tables and suddenly realised that it was both a map tile server and also a spatial query processor, all for free! Had previously struggled setting up PostGIS and Tilestache, so this was quite an eye-opener. Made a little test project, showing most of the gym locations in the UK, which shows the nearest five gyms for any other gym and also has Street View captures for a small subset of them.

The Code Challenge - a maths treasure hunt by the BBC

I helped make the games and treasure hunt for a BBC Two series called The Code, a fantastic three-part series about maths in the world around us presented by Prof. Marcus du Sautoy. While it's just finished, you can still watch clips; play games about tessellation, prime numbers, symmetry (this one is awesome), and physics; and tackle our beautiful, free 84 page book of puzzles. Then there's the treasure... [more inside]
