Lost Notes: Season 4
KCRW’s acclaimed music documentary podcast, Lost Notes, is back for its fourth season! Co-hosts Novena Carmel (KCRW) and Michael Barnes (KCRW / KPFK / Artform Radio) guide you through eight wildly different and deeply human stories, each set against the kaleidoscopic backdrop of LA’s soul and R&B scene of the 1950s-1970s. (The fifth of eight episodes releases this week on Wednesday.) [more inside]
You Don't Have To Ride - Gospel Records from My Collection
I've been collecting gospel records for a little while now and figured it was time that I share. Every day I post at least one track from my collection. Most of these tracks are from the late sixties through the early eighties and clearly influenced by secular black American music, but with a twist. For various reasons the vast majority of gospel music has never been reissued and isn't available digitally, so this is the first time these songs are available without tracking down the original releases in most cases. "The Accretion Disc", a techno soul LP
Coalescing gradually like it's astronomical namesake, "The Accretion Disc" is an electronic music album collecting 13 of my favorite tracks from the past 13 years. Some of the songs have been out on vinyl before, and some of them have been posted to MeFi Music, but many have never been made available at all before now. The music is dense, melodic, Detroit-influenced techno and electro-funk, with an emphasis on soul, swing, squirty basslines, and catchy hooks. All of these tracks are deeply personal to me. If you enjoy the music of Underground Resistance, Fabrice Lig, Matthew Herbert, or Kevin Saunderson, you may find something you like. Pricing is pay-what-you-want, starting at $6, and I've set up a special offer code for MeFi that will knock another 10% off. Simply enter the word "ponyrequest" at checkout (without the quotes). Soul Possession, Ben Hamper's radio show arhive site
Best selling author Ben Hamper (Rivethead) has a vast knowledge of music. He hosts two radio shows, Soul Possession and Head For The Hills, both broadcast on community station WNMC 90.1 FM located in Traverse City, MI. Here is an archive of the streams for both shows. 'Soul Possession' is two hours of classic R&B, Funk, Soul and Blues, while 'Head For The Hills' is an hour of old Country, Hillbilly and Western music. Ben digs deep and mainly plays obscurities, B-sides and other rarities. There is also a link to listen to the streams live. I've been maintaining the site for over a year now and felt that there is enough material on it now to share with the Blue. Enjoy!
THUNDER SOUL at more film festivals
I have discussed THUNDER SOUL on MeFi Projects previously when we were premiering at SXSW. The documentary is about the Kashmere Stage Band, the greatest high-school funk band of all time. The film tells the band's amazing story in the 1970s, and follows the band members in the present day as they come back together again to play a reunion concert for their incredible band leader Conrad "Prof" Johnson. I just wanted to let MetaFilter know that we will be screening at the Edinburgh Film Festival, the Seattle Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Film Festival in the upcoming month in case any of you are able to come to the screenings.
