reExposures.com ..finding a story in every picture
reExposures.com is a blog that explores the power — synergy — of words and pictures working together. It takes a second look at well-known images and introduces new ones. It also looks at imaging tools and technology, and throws in some background info about the art, history, humanity, or science behind an image. To get a few creative licks in, I may create composite images to illustrate a post. I also rework found images and add prose, poetry, or pithy quotes to them. Plus, I offer a few good links in the best MetaFilter tradition.

Learning to be a leftie.
Roughly two and a half weeks ago I was hit by a motorcycle while biking to work. My right arm was broken at the wrist, elbow and shoulder. I'm right handed. Faced with the prospect of not being able to draw anything for eight weeks, I decided to teach myself how to draw with my left hand. The blog is the record of my ongoing efforts, which are turning out surprisingly well. The main hurdle is just how goddam long it all takes.

Melissa Golden Photography
I just quit my staff photographer job at a newspaper in the deep south for a life of freelance photojournalism in Washington DC. In honor of this most tremendous dive into the deep end, I present my new website; a place where my pictures can linger in the ether of the internet and perhaps strike a chord with some folks. Thanks for looking!

Ice cream that will blow your mind
Dulce de leche with brownie chunks? Or maybe chocolate with figs and walnuts. No? How about kumquats in whiskey or pears in Burgundy? You could dedicate an entire trip to Buenos Aires to tasting ice cream and still only scratch the surface. This article in the Los Angeles Times Travel section has a run-down of the ice cream shops and flavors not to be missed. (Note: this is the mysterious ice cream project referenced in this Metatalk post.)

Night Blooming
My first short film (15 min.). No budget and no film school experience. It is adapted from a short story of the same name by Kevin Fanning, published on The Morning News in 2003.

Lumosity Brain Games
This is something I've been working on for the last year. All the games on the site are based on existing neuroscience research as well of some of our own research (check out the science page). We've tried really hard to make these activities into something more fun than boring lab exercises. Hope you enjoy!

ZChurk Word Game (Flash)
1) Arrange the pieces as advantageously as you can devise
2) Find words in them for points! Just start typing them in once the pieces are legally placed, followed by <enter>.

Scoring is pretty Scrabble-like, the blue squares are 2x and 3x the letter on them and the pink/red ones are 2x and 3x word score. Word length bonuses start at 25 for 6 letters and go +25 per letter after that. Usually you can't rotate the pieces.

Draft Dick Cheney!
From the sands of Iraq to the ice caps of Antarctica, only one man can keep the Bush legacy alive! From the ghettos of the city to the tree-lined streets of your town, only one man can bring all Americans back together! From the war on terror to the chase for Osama bin Laden, only one man can tell America what to do! Draft Dick Cheney--and this time, don't let him plead "other priorities!"

Lightning and other long exposure photos
I've taken over 2000 photos at 15 second exposure attempting to catch lightning. I also photograph the northern lights. These are some of my favorite pics that I swap out from time to time. Notice the meteor streak in the northern lights image. That kept me happy for months.

SQUARE magazine website
A friend of mine recently started a magazine in and for Tulsa, Oklahoma. I've been placed in charge of the website. I'll be going along on the featured Thrift Store Road Trip. We'll be driving from Tulsa to Toronto and back in seven days. We are packing no bags, as all our clothing will be purchased at thrift stores along the way.

Primary Source News
The Internet and information technology have made primary source materials more widely available than ever before, yet the presentation of the news is too often commentary with little substance. The interviews, government documents, statements, art and images we are providing represents the raw data that is the news, and as much of it as we can find.

Metafiltr
It's Metafilter 2.0. Hopefully to blossom as a clearinghouse for absurdist mefi humor, including bizarre flash apps. This is brand-stinking new; if I'm omitting some good self-reflective mefi blogs or stunts or misc. content, please let me know!

Let’s play games for the first time…and fail.
People record themselves playing video games for the first time, with no prior knowledge of the controls, game play, mechanics or storyline. And then they fail. During this, they swear a lot. Currently, all of the content is screen capture with audio, but I'm hoping people will eventually submit webcam/video with a picture in picture of a face growing exponentially more frustrated. It is interesting because, while the videos are amusing to watch, they are infinitely more fun to make and submit. The site is based off of an idea proposed by a SomethingAwful.com member, and used with permission.

Petition: Los Angeles demands goats for fire safety
The citizens of Los Angeles are deeply concerned after serious wildfires in the Griffith Park and Hollywood Hills have destroyed vast swaths of urban wilderness and killed or displaced thousands of animals during their breeding season. These fires feed upon unchecked dry undergrowth, and endanger lives, homes, historic monuments and our enjoyment of the city. It will take decades before Griffith Park is restored to its pre-fire condition. We the undersigned demand that the City of Los Angeles and the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks respond to this continued threat by bringing in shepherds with herds of goats to graze on the dry hills, a plan previously implemented with great success by UC Berkeley in the aftermath of that community's devastating 1991 fire. Goats are economical, ecological fire-fighting machines that produce fertilizer as they clear hills and canyons of weeds, poison oak and dry chaparral. Additionally, the animals are charming, newsworthy ambassadors for fire safety, a subject that needs to be more widely discussed. We want to save our parks and mountains. We want goats!

I just took 100 photos in 100 days
Frustrated with my lack of photographic output, I resolved, starting Feb 1, to take and post a photo every day for 100 days. I just finished today!

Send Sal Fasano to the MLB All-Star Game
Sal Fasano is a 35 year-old catcher on the Toronto Blue Jays.
He has a lifetime batting average of .222.
He also happens to have the world's coolest Fu Manchu mustache.

The goal is to get Sal onto the 2007 AL All-Star team. Sal's not actually listed on the All-Star ballot (ridiculous!), but they allow write-in candidates. Visit the site for a link to the All-Star ballot and to find out how you can help (also stop by the blog for some fun) :{

pictures of Suburban Houses
I've started taking pictures of new construction, cookie cutter suburban houses. And once you start doing that, it's hard to stop, because it keeps popping up everywhere you look. Let me know what you think.
