I'm a storyteller and standup comic in NYC, and I just posted this standup act/story about what it was like to have to prepare for my first baby while grieving my own father - and getting some surprise inspiration from my stoner mother-in-law. I'd greatly appreciate your checking it out and sharing it everywhere if you're so moved.
The sample chapter linked here is from Visualizations for Heartbreak, which I self-published in 2020 (in print and electronic versions). The narrative of the book focuses on the traumatic ending of a romantic relationship, but the anguish, rage, shame, and catharsis depicted in its pages are also relevant to other experiences with difficult good-byes. The text is accompanied by photographs and collages (also by the author), and I've recently had recordings made of me reading the text. I believe there is a need for this book, but so far I haven't had much success marketing it. Any suggestions are welcome!
In July of 2017 my mother died after a long time being sick. She and I always had a tremulous relationship, and since the late 90's I've been her care taker on and off. I had a lot of feelings about her passing, so I worked through them making art. [more inside]
A 9-page comic about grief, generation gaps, Indian counterculture and Nagpur Railway Station, where the final missing link was inspired by a Metafilter comment. [more inside]
Metafilter saved my life on so many days when I felt hopeless and alone. Here is my love letter back. It's about systems collapse, intimacy, and grief. I tried to keep it as funny as possible, but it did turn out a little dark. I hope you like it. If financial concerns prevent you from enjoying this work at this time, ping me. I think a crate of .pdf's fell off the Amazon truck.
New podcast about grief and loss from the NPO where I work. Conversational in tone, aimed at helping those grieving a death, and those supporting the grievers, with a particular emphasis on helping kids.
We Live Without You is a curated collection of stories found in books, films, podcasts (and more) about the personal experiences of saying goodbye and learning to live without the ones we love. We're deeply grateful to all the wonderful authors, filmmakers, journalists, producers and publishers whose work we've referenced and linked to on our site. Please share it with everyone.
