Literal is the new ironic.
Would be even better applied to the current-events (aka Trump) themed 'daily cartoons' in their daily emails. Or the cartoons by MeFi's Own John Leavitt (which the Conde Nast store has already done to one of them).

Your approach works for the clown, less for the already overly ironic cartoons.
