Bluebeard Contest
In conjunction with its upcoming exhibition “Gustave Doré (1832-1883): Master of Imagination”, the National Gallery of Canada is seeking black and white illustrations, inspired by Gustave Doré’s graphic artwork, for the tale of Bluebeard. The deadline for submissions is February 28th, 2014. Send your Bluebeards to bluebeard.in.black.and.white@gmail.com!

Eligible works will be used to populate an on-line gallery on the exhibition’s website, prior to an open call to the public. All artists who submit an eligible illustration before February 28th, 2014 will be entered into a draw (which will take place June 13th, 2014) to win one of three prizes:

One of two pairs of complimentary tickets to the exhibition

A copy of the catalogue for the exhibition in either English or French

Gustave Doré was a cartoonist, caricaturist, illustrator, sculptor and painter whose wide-ranging works helped shape the artistic culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, including comic books and graphic arts. One of his most celebrated works is his illustration of the folk tale of Bluebeard, in which a woman discovers that Bluebeard, the grotesque nobleman she has married, had murdered all his previous wives, and manages to avoid the same fate. You can read the Bluebeard story here and see Dorés Bluebeard illustrations here.

The deadline for submissions is February 28th, 2014. Please send submissions to bluebeard.in.black.and.white@gmail.com, with a minimum size of 1920px by 1080px, at a minimum resolution of 72 DPI. We ask that you review the Terms of Use before submitting your artwork, and include your name, a brief artist’s statement and your e-mail address. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

The National Gallery of Canada reserves the right to refuse any submission deemed unacceptable.
