Cock-rocking the NPR Crowd in Brooklyn: And I Am Not Lying Live, a Comedy Storytelling Burlesque Sideshow
I've started a monthly variety show in Brooklyn based on my blog: And I Am Not Lying. MeFites may remember it from the tales of my band with piano-playing chickens or the infamous iced espresso incident. The show is an outgrowth of the work I've been doing since 2008 in the exploding NYC storytelling scene. We've got a residency at Union Hall in Brooklyn on the first Tuesday of every month - comedy, storytelling, burlesque and sideshow. There's a post explaining more here (image features boobs in pasties, click at your own risk), and you can go off and get tickets here.
Since 2008 I've gotten really, really into the exploding NYC storytelling scene, had stories on This American Life and The Moth podcast. Here's a (possibly NSFW) trailer for the thing, and some sample video from past shows:
Comedy by Michael Che
Burlesque from Brad Lawrence, Cyndi Freeman, and Apathy Angel
Story by Jeff Simmermon (me)
also stories by my show partners Brad Lawrence and Cyndi Freeman, veterans of the NYC storytelling and burlesque scenes.
And then there's this -- possibly one of the most twisted, hilarious and dark live performances I've ever seen - also probably NSFW:
Mat Fraser and Julie Atlas Muz
I/it got a tiny name-drop in the NYT a few weeks ago - brief, but I'll take it: Telling Tales With a Tear and a Smile.
We're just busting ourselves wide open to get butts in sets at this thing. Clawing for audience in the crowded performance marketplace that is New York City is pretty tough. But we think we've got something special here, and I hope you Metafilter people do, too.
