Film Addict
In response to one of those stupid Facebook note memes, I've made a page where it's easy to show how you are The Best at watching movies. How many of the top 250 movies have you watched? Why hasn't your co-worker seen The Godfather, what the hell is his problem?

Compare yourself to me and get ready to ridicule my selections!

Awesome. You should add a "twitter this" button at the end.

Done. Allowing twittering will be the downfall of my web server. 54 submissions and climbing.
posted by Plutor at 11:09 AM on December 13, 2008

66%

I think you should add "Metropolitan," "Hannah and Her Sisters," "Monsieur Verdoux," "Meet Me In St. Louis," "All That Jazz," "Zellig," "The Seven Year Itch," "Some Like It Hot," "Barry Lyndon," "The Gold Rush," ''Gertie The Dinosaur," "Le Jette," "Top Hat," "Greed," "Lolita," "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Being John Malcovich," Match Game," and "Un Chien Andalou."

The list is actually just the top 250 from IMDB. I suppose I should mention that on the page.

I was about to say! The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was fun, but really??

Neat idea! I got 68%.

Sweet, you already created a monster on twitter.

Very nice. 98%, but one of my goals is to watch all of the Top 250.

76.8% (I got worse as the list went on) and now I'd like a button that I could click that would give me a printable checklist of just the ones I haven't seen.

And now it's been kottke'd. One thousand submissions in the last hour. Top ten most-seen movies:

Back to the Future - 94.20%
The Matrix - 94.16%
Star Wars - 93.79%
Forrest Gump - 92.73%
Pulp Fiction - 91.81%
Raiders of the Lost Ark - 90.98%
Toy Story - 90.89%
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back - 90.29%
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - 89.97%
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - 88.64%

/went to film school
//imdb is so skewed to modern internet nerds with limited movies it's just silly
///i'm an interenet nerd too tho
posted by Lacking Subtlety at 3:32 PM on December 15, 2008

Yeah, there are a handful of movies that I seriously don't think belong on the top 250 but are there because of the skew. But on the other hand, there's more variety than you'd expect from just internet nerds. There's also a skew towards newer movies (mostly because people willing to see them in theaters are more likely to like them). WALL-E was fantastic, as was Slumdog Millionaire. But I don't think either of them belong on the top 250 movies of all time. And The Dark Knight was awesome, but the 4th best movie ever? Come on.

Before I knew this was the IMDB top 250, one of my coworkers said, "This was done by a guy, wasn't it?"

54%, but I'm assuming that is my percentile ranking, right? (I'll happily settle for middle-of-the-road.)
posted by iamkimiam at 11:37 PM on December 15, 2008

Ugh. Make that 52%. I had to do it again, and apparently I've unseen a few in the last half hour. It happens.
posted by iamkimiam at 11:46 PM on December 15, 2008

Or wait, does this mean that others have taken it and have seen more movies than me, causing my rank to go down?
posted by iamkimiam at 11:47 PM on December 15, 2008

No, it's not percentile. It's just the percentage of the movies you've seen (52% is 130/250). It's now been taken more than 10k times, and here's the breakdown of how often people have seen any given number of movies. You're above the mode, but probably somewhere around the median.

oh man, I suck. I was somewhere around 36%. Time to get rentin'.
posted by desjardins at 6:02 AM on December 16, 2008

desjardins, I got 19.6%! I don't see many movies, as you can tell.

Well I'll be damned. I took this the other day and didn't even realize it was a MeFi project. Go Facebook memes, I guess.

96.4%, but I made a big push awhile back to familiarize myself with popular films.

It's not a terrible list, but there are definitely a lot of films on it that don't belong in a list of the top 250 films made.
posted by johnofjack at 8:05 AM on December 27, 2008

Turns out I'm only 26% addicted. Still, with films like Ratatouille making the list of films I didn't see, I don't rate that as a bad thing. Will have to show this to my Facebook lovin' fiancee later. This is right up her alley.
posted by Effigy2000 at 8:45 PM on December 31, 2008

56%, yeah, but I've seen nearly 90% of the movies I want to see off of that list. Again and again the "WTF SRSLY?" came up.
posted by klangklangston at 3:55 PM on January 22, 2009

Ratatouille is surprisingly good. But it's weird that it's on there and not, say, Iron Giant, which is from the same guy and pretty great (made me cry, even).

In true code-reuse fashion, I've created Book Addict. Are you a bigger Book Addict than me? Probably.
