Private Lives
A piano-forward set of cabaret songs, each from the point of view of a different character, evoking the atmosphere of a basement club where people wear too much makeup and share too many secrets.
My Bumper Book of Lies
To celebrate my birthday this year, I decided to release an album. Actually, I was working on it anyway, and it ended up coinciding.
Everything by me except the cover, which was drawn for my by the wonderful illustrator Viviane Schwarz.
Also on Spotify, Apple Music and, I have it on good authority, all the other streaming services.
The Essential Ghoul's Record Shelf.
Capsule reviews of supernaturally themed novelty songs.
Ukulele song book index, and chord tracker
I like to play the ukulele everyday. I know a bunch of chords but not all of them. I wanted to have a tool that searches song books based on which chords I already know, so I could discover new songs and navigate my books better. Click the chord diagrams you know, and it displays a directory of all the songs you can play with those chords. [more inside]
New Album by Heartmath: "All the light"
Faced with the bitter end of a treasured relationship, composer Heartmath was heavy with grief, lost, unmoored. Since energy can neither be destroyed nor created, only transformed from one state to another, he chose to pour his feelings into "All the light", recorded as a paean, a tribute, to honor his cherished experience and the woman he shared it with. Wonderful Christmastheme: Collaborative Christmas album
Wonderful Christmastheme is an album of Christmas music by members of Theme Music, a Facebook group in which there is a theme posted every two weeks, and members of the group -- who range from professional musicians to non-musicians singing into their phones -- perform songs that fit the theme. It turns out quite a few Themesters like Christmas music. [more inside]
Song name haiku
Given the name of a musical artist, "Song name haiku" finds haikus where each line is the name of a song by that artist.
SoundTalk - Turn forum conversations into playlists
SoundTalk is a Chrome extension that finds song titles in the current page and generates a Spotify playlist. For example, with two clicks it turns this recent Ask thread about ultra sparse music into this playlist. It's different from other tools because it looks for any text that seems like a song title, rather than just finding links to known music services. More playlists and suggested uses below the fold. Darling Danielle EP
Four ukulele songs. Genre guesstimate: confessional showtunes.
The 100 Most Influential Singles of the 1960s
I liked Pitchfork's list of the 100 best songs of the 1960s for creating a canon of great 1960s songs instead of keeping the focus solely on albums, but I wanted to create my own revisionist take on such a list with the constraint that I limit myself to songs that were actually released on 45rpm singles. In addition, to make the list more interesting, I decided to focus on records that I thought were the most influential rather than songs that I considered the coolest or the best or the most pleasurable.
Stumbling Drunk With Love for the World
Demos of a small pile of songs I've written (and a couple I haven't). Voice and ukulele, sorry to those with high-art sensibilities. A lot of these I've been playing at campfires in my community for years; some friends bugged me to record some before I move away, so here it is... The 'Flyball's Lament' track is a verbose reinterpretation of the MeFiMu classic by The Great Big Mulp. [more inside]
Dustys Discover Internet!
My band the Dustys have a new website to showcase the songs we've been recording for the past year (instead of touring). We'll be releasing a new video and song every few weeks. We're especially excited about the video for Blueberry, which we shot in Montana with a cast of many!
The 100 best songs of the decade
As you might have guessed from the title, I'm counting down the best songs of the decade -- thanks in no small part to the enormous help many of you gave me in an AskMetafilter question several months ago. I've been posting 10 new songs every week (with embedded video for almost every song), and I'm up to #11 now. The top 10 will be gradually rolled out from Monday to Friday of next week. (There are also 100 runner-up songs in addition to the top 100.) [more inside]
