Tulip Creative Computer
Tulip is a cheap (US$59, basically the cost for parts/assembly), simple and overall FUN portable computer for making things. music, animations, writing. It boots right into a Python prompt, no other OS. No AI, no ads, not even Wi-Fi unless you type in some stuff. Tulip comes with a really good synthesizer and a lot of music stuff (MIDI, CV, sequencer, sampler, drum machine, DX7, Juno-6). Purely open source, the point is to gather a community of like-minded people that love this sort of thing to make it even better.
Role: i developed a lot of it, alongside my friend Dan Ellis and some others

Saw a post elsewhere (HN?) and it seems really cool, good luck, very impressed.

Hey... "August 1 2024: Tulip's manufacturer sold out of the first batch of Tulips yesterday" I know it's a passel of trouble but you should mebe add a pre-order link and cycle through a lot of caveats but let people send you money.

Nice! It was funny, I knew "writer deck" had to be a thing, but I didn't know what people called it, and I got sent a link to the reddit and I was like "Oh, perfect." It could use some help to be a great writerdeck but it's close now! I hope someone runs with that and makes a great word processor in python on it.

I don't think I understand - can you explain your comment more? The current order link on the site/Makerfabs (who are not me, I don't handle any of that) is a real order, they take your money and will ship it within a couple of weeks (their estimate was shipping by Aug 20 for this batch.) They do batched just-in-time manufacturing, pretty common for a niche electronics DIY-y thing like this. The only weirdness was the first launch batch size earlier in the week was too low for the demand, so they scaled it up, which everyone agrees is a good thing! It was just my intent adding that note that if you ordered today you won't get it shipped today because the first in-stock batch got sold out.

I perhaps did not click through far enough, saw a banner that they were sold out until Aug 20.
