Interesting Times
Fortnightly mixtapes of fresh, pan-Asian independent music. From Karachi rooftops to Tokyo livehouses. Letter archives are over here.

Twice a month, I pick five independent songs from across the Asian continent, along with little snippets of relevant local indie history and interviews, where possible.

Emphasis on new music [within the last six months, ideally] and geographical diversity. The first letter featured music from Pakistan, Japan, Cambodia, Indonesia and Singapore. The second from the Philippines, India, China, South Korea and Thailand.

Many music communities where I'm from [India and Singapore] don't think regionally. Most people are likelier to know niche U.S. bands than mainstream Pakistani or Malaysian bands. This is an attempt to situate local indie within regional contexts, uncovering connections and shared histories that are forgotten or glossed over.

Do give me feedback, and I'd be delighted if anyone would like to suggest songs or curate selections from a particular country/place.

I got letter #3 a few days ago and I absolutely loved every minute of it. It is such a pleasure to get a curated music playlist in my inbox every so often, like a really good magazine subscription or a present. Thank you!

Thanks, WidgetAlley!

And dhruva: I'm working on it! It should be a podcast too by the time Letter #5 goes out.
