Steven Gawoski - Art & Theory
In commemoration of the opening of my Soho art show Hidden Spaces I am posting my new website. My art is comprised of graphite and monochrome color pencil works transcribed and augmented from microscopic organic forms. For further elaboration see my artist statement on my site.

These are really cool. I grew up with "Laboratory Medicine" as my bathroom reading material (my mother was a medical technologist). While normal kids were coding whatever normal kids did I was reading about exotic blood illnesses and seeing slides of the craziest things.

This has made me into somewhat of a hypochondriac. I have to say these cause me some discomfort to view. I'm pretty sure many of them are in my blood and stool right now.

Thanks.

These are seriously great.

One criticism that I'm sure artists are sick of hearing but I think it applies to your case: your "Artist Statement" is, in my reading, a little too jargony and distancing. It falls into a lot of the traps that cause artist statements to be roundly mocked all over the web.

But, your work speaks for itself, so no worries my friend.

I'm going to second Think_Long on that. I read the statement to my girlfriend in the most senatorial tone I could muster, which is a bad snobbish British accent, and I mumbled past a few words. I did appreciate the remote viewing and inspiration aspects of explaining the process of creating these images. I would serve web viewers better to have a more approachable explanation of the process and what you are going for here.

I would agree my second sentence in is my biggest pit fall and sadly sets the tone. I crowd sourced about 15 artists to craft this puppy and it seemed tight at the time. Now it does seem pretty stogie. Due for a rewrite.

My wife says thank you.

Let us know if you want some more input on it from a layman's perspective.
