I have just made my debut solo album available as a free download, here:

The album is available for free as a .zip of 13 standard 128k mp3s. Higher-quality sound files are available for purchase at the same location.

The album is being released under a Creative Commons license. Listeners are encouraged to re-distribute this music however they like, provided attribution is given to the songwriter.

Bandcamp is interesting in itself, see also http://cllct.com/ (which offers a similar service) and http://muxtape.com/, which is rebooting and claims it will offer a similar service in the future. Giving music away free online seems like a good idea for unknown bands, so this is kind of an ongoing experiment. The high-quality file purchase option is also an experiment rather than a geniune attempt to make money. I'm just curious to see what will happen.

I'm one of the people who helps run cllct, so thanks for the mention. One of the big things we're trying to do is to get people who want their albums hosted involved in the community aspect of it, as we're musicians from all over who have toured with each other and played shows with each other and want to sort of band together while welcoming anyone else who wants to be a part of the group to do so and contribute as much or as little as they want. Everything on the site is done pretty much democratically, and anyone who is really active can help guide the growth of the website.
