Barack Obama iPhone Application
As part of a small volunteer team of folks we released the official Barack Obama iPhone app today. To go from first line of code to shipping took just under 3 weeks. We had a team of 10 developers (only 3 coders). The app has (obviously) been pretty well received so far, despite a small bug that causes it to crash for most of Pittsburgh. You can read a bit about my role as Lead Developer on my blog: toxicsoftware Raven Zachary was the primary project leader and wrote up a much better post.

Electicker 2008 | your election fix on one page
This has been posted to Projects before, but it has changed so much since that I feel it is almost a different project altogether. Electicker is a single page aggregator (think Popurls or Original Signal) on the 2008 US Presidential election. It monitors content from over 100 sources and displays it all on one page, providing election junkies with their minute-to-minute fix on the road to the White House.

Steve Jobs Facts
Much like Chuck Norris Facts... but with more mock turtlenecks and style. Add facts, vote up your favorites, and vote down your least favorites, browse by recent, ratings or random... all the good stuff.

Teach the Controversy
Teach The Controversy is an intelligently designed t-shirt store dedicated to challenge 'big science' and their blatant anti-wacko agenda. So I've really taken to the idea of running t-shirt stores where all the designs are based around a single unified theme, and so for my second attempt this particular creationist meme seemed ripe for parody (while hopefully not being to shrill or strident in my ribbing). Hope you enjoy them!

Garkov -- Garfield + Markov chains
Garkov is a comic strip generator that uses Markov chains to synthesize new Garfield strips based on transcripts of several hundred existing strips. The output varies nicely from plausible to surreal to downright incoherent.

Photoshop Disasters
Just as the Daily WTF showcases disastrous code, Photoshop Disasters is a showcase for the most egregious examples of Art Direction gone awry. If you work with digitally enhanced images in a commercial setting please consider submitting your competitors' fiascoes, disasters and misadventures. After all, there is never a problem so severe that it can't be ridiculed.

BANANA: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World
This is the site for my new book, "Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World." The book is a general-interest cultural, scientific, and economic history of the fruit, centering around an incurable blight that is currently spreading through the world's banana crop. The book was released in January, 2008; my blog includes links to reviews, as well as current news on the fruit - ranging from reviews of the best banana costumes to news items covering the advance of banana disease.

Sam & Max Nearly Save Christmas
The place I work makes interactive narrative games for PC (and a few other platforms). If you're familiar with the LucasArts/Sierra "adventure games" tradition, then you'll have a good idea of the type of thing I'm talking about. Problem is, a lot of people *aren't* so familiar with it, and unlike "casual" games like Peggle or Bejeweled, it can take a little bit longer to just dive in and figure these games out!

So, in an effort to bridge the gap and introduce new people to the (IMHO) unique & hilarious world of our characters, we've spent the last week or two busting our collective asses *removing* the interactive component from some of our stuff to create this Christmas video!

Seriously though, this was a fun thing to be a part of and I've been absolutely amazed at how quickly & beautifully it came together, so I just wanted to post it here and share the "healing nog of Christmas" with a few more folks. Hope you enjoy!

(FYI, there is a bit of "grown-up" humor in here. Nothing gross or offensive, just some bleeped out swears & a little cartoon violence =)

I'm playing tonight (Monday) with Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers!!!
Only just thought about Metafilter! Do come if you can, this is my last show of the year and probably for most of January (when I'm taking it easy) and I've gone wild with the magic tricks, lights, treats, dancers, musicians -- and Gibby!!!!!!

P/Virt Shared World Wiki
In a recent MetaTalk thread, the assembled MeFites decided, among other things, to take on a "shared world" fiction project, in which a bunch of people would contribute short stories set in a single, near-future, science-fiction world. The actual cat herding and possibly editing duties are being handled by robocop is bleeding, but I'm handling the world-building preliminaries. The upshot? The P/Virt Wiki is up and ready for editing. I've seeded it with my ideas for a world where certain people have the ability to enter Philosophical/Virtual Reality, a place where they can change their surroundings with their mind. For the next two weeks or so, interested people are invited to help flesh out the basics of the world. Once that's done, a bunch of MeFites will be writing stories set in this world. From there, who knows?

One Day The Soldiers Came
My first book was just published and I have a website to go along with it, with it a blog. The book presents the stories of children affected by armed conflict and 60% of my royalties go to benefit the advocacy organization Refugees International . The book contains a lot of drawings made by children around the world in refugee camps, shanty towns, and demobilization and rehabilitation centers, and there are many more unpublished drawings I collected from kids in Africa, Asia, and the Balkans. These images and some background on them will be collected in a virtual gallery on the website, providing an unique perspective on the madness that is modern warfare.

Why Tuesday? Vlog
A new video blog created by the election reform group 'Why Tuesday?' to increase voter turnout. One of the easiest ways would be to move election day to the weekend or create a voting holiday. Each week we'll be looking at other voting issues as well as asking people to ask their local politicians why we vote on Tuesday and send in the video.

Layer Tennis
From the ashes of Coudal Partners' Photoshop Tennis rises Layer Tennis. The same basic gameplay: Two designers or artists are on the court; one serves up an image, the other responds, building off of what he/she was given, back and forth until 10 images are completed. The whole thing is accompanied by play-by-play commentary, with a forum for audience conversation. Runs every Friday at 2pm Central / 3pm Eastern / 8pm GMT through the end of the year (and maybe beyond).
(coudal is the creator on this; I'm helping out with commentary and moderation.)
