Shut Up and Beer Me
shutupandbeer.me is a site that finds you beer.

Worked on this with my friend Aashish Gadani

This is neat! I "allowed" it to find the location of my computer and saw that it recommended one beer place (Maria Maria - not a place I go to). Walnut Creek is *loaded* with beer connections.

So... How does it work?

The spinner just spins forever and never finds me a beer. :(

I suspect it's "closest business tagged as 'Bar' on Yelp"; or maybe "closest result in a search for 'beer' on Yelp". Mine was the Dave & Busters in the Great Mall.

(I had thought that the pool hall down the road was probably my closest beer. Looking at the map, Dave & Busters is actually slightly closer in as-the-crow-flies distance; but it's the other side of the train tracks so it's a lot further in any practical sense.)

I'd kinda like a "beer me some more" button that finds maybe the next 5?

I just want to reiterate I think this is a really cool project - it just seems like it could be even more cool by offering several options.

For instance, here is the listing for "beer" in Walnut Creek, California from Yelp. I see a number of my favorite places that have great local brews and national brews on tap: The Counter, ØL Beercafe & Bottle Shop, Kanishka’s Neo-Indian Gastropub, Pyramid. These should be listed, for sure.

Sunol Ridge Restaurant & Bar is *fairly* new so I wouldn't necessarily expect to see it, but I would expect it to be added at some point as it's a fairly heavy-duty (and upscale) beer connection. (They have a water trough you can sit at - visible from street as I press my nose against the glass to view. Then they come out and tell me to go away..)

McCovey's is closed (not my fave but a beer spot), but places like Pinky's Pizza Parlor have great selections on tap (and bottled) - we had a meetup there.

Also, you might want to consider whether to include smaller (local) breweries that have tasting rooms; I've visited a few and they're really fun. Worth inclusion, IMHO. There are many in my region.

I think this project needs to be more robust but you've got a gem of an idea here. Good luck!

(Hadn't previewed... yes I like the 'beer me some more' option.)

I suspect the quality of the results is directly dependent on the quality of Yelp's listings. (And looking at the Yelp search API, I would guess that the "beer me" result is the top result of a search with term="beer" sort=1 ll=<location lat, long>?)

On closer look, it's spinning because I was blocking the location information from your page. I figured out how to unblock it and it successfully gave me the bar 200 feet from my front door. Maybe you should have a timeout error if you can't get the geolocation info.

Good call octothorpe. Adding that later tonight :)

"Beer me some more" is also something we thought of adding. Will maybe try that later this week

This project was about a 3 hour hack on a Friday night, which is why it's so simple. All we do is take your location and feed it to the yelp API with "beer" (exactly as suggested by We had a deal, Kyle), grab the street view image for the location, and then create a google maps link for you.

I test websites for a living, I can't help but file bug reports when I see them.

It shows me a local diner instead of the nearest bar, but a really fun concept!

Does what it says on the tin! It found our 'Well it's just around the corner, they have good beer and their appetizers are tasty, so why don't we go there for drinks after work' bar near the office. This place.

I was genuinely surprised to see a recommendation near me in Sweden. Cool!

Could we get the cider version? pretty please

Innnnnteresting. Not accurate -- e.g., Poppy's Family Restaurant doesn't actually serve alcohol -- but I like the idea. Keep at it!
