Brother Hawk is Led by Love

Atlanta band Brother Hawk is basically a family, anchored by childhood friends. Until two years ago, there was literal family in the band. Then Joe Brisendine, harmonica player and the singer’s dad, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. I wrote in Immersive Atlanta about the love and loss that surrounds their album The Clear Lake and their new follow up EP.

At the end, who did you hold close and who did you push away?

My mom died of cancer a few days before Christmas. In the six months between when she was diagnosed and when she died I tried to photograph her struggles and decline (mainly as something to do in all the craziness). The final project was small: 10 photos and a short essay on her problematic role as a parent. I didn't expect the reception it got. Some people were moved, others hated it. I permanently lost contact with one of my siblings. I still think it was the right thing to publish. As complicated a relationship I had with her, her end of life and death were worth chronicling.

Songs for the Cure 2011

A multi-disc album (available for download or CD purchase) of original and arranged music, spanning a huge range of genres, for which all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society via UCincinnati's Relay for Life program. The roster is a Who's Who of indie game music, including the composers for Super Meat Boy, Minecraft, and Unreal, and the guys behind Metroid Metal and Overclocked ReMix (and ..MeFi's own jake). The goal is to raise $10k by the end of April.

Less Cancer, More Cake: A Charity Run Fundraiser

On Oct. 10, my birthday, I will be running in the Portland (OR) Charity Half-Marathon, in affiliation with the American Cancer Society. I am selling photos I have taken in New Orleans, where I have lived for the past four years, in order to help raise at least $1,000 and hopefully reach my goal of $1,500 (and am also accepting direct donations). I will be officially running in memory of the late Emilie Lemmons of St. Paul MN, a dear friend of mine who died in Dec. 2008 after a long battle with sarcoma. She was 40 years old. [more inside]
