We built a giant eagle pupper for Iceland's national day
This is the fifth large scale puppet we have built, and the first one done officially as a puppet making company. Custom designed wings, a completely novel neck mechanism, and literally thousands of laser cut feathers.

This Is What Democracy Look Like... Somewhere
I've always been fascinated by how elections are run around the world. Democracy in the US is crumbling, but it's not always clear what the alternative could be. So I decided to start a podcast where I ask average people how democracy works in their country, and whether they understand and/or trust it. Do they feel like they are truly represented? What other groups or institutions count as part of the democratic process (e.g., the military, students, unions, etc.)? Does federalism always lead to a 'state's rights' kind of scenario? The result is the DEMOCRACY IN... PODCAST.

Finishing my grandfather's work: stained glass menorah
A few years ago my parents gave me my Grandpa Milt's old stained glass stuff, including a large unfinished menorah piece. I've spent the last two weeks finally tackling the logistically and emotionally complicated job of repairing and elaborating on his piece to create a finished work. This is a summary with photos of that process. I also created an exhaustive step-by-step process thread on the fly as I worked through the whole thing.

Recent work at USGS Water
This is a link to a blog, which is itself a project that I have worked on, along with other teammates. It highlights work that I and my coworkers at U.S. Geological Survey Water Mission Area have been working on over the past few years.

Lud-in-the-Mist in Chinese
"Lud-in-the-Mist", a fantasy novel by British author Hope Mirrlees, came into public domain earlier this year in the US and I made a Chinese translation of it. It's a book I enjoyed very much, with caveats about its outdated gender & class politics. I've 3/4 done with the first round of revisions, and that's what has been posted on the Dreamwidth site. (And thank you Mefi, this is where I first learned of this delightful book.)

Post-Gogol World
Daniil Kharms' (discussed here and here) texts (specifically, 8 texts) were translated (into English) and recorded (on analog tape) with improvized jazz (by musicians). The Musicians' Improvized Jazz Analog Tape English Translations of 8 Specific Daniil Kharms Texts was supposedly "too long" and "not great", so we titled the album "Post-Gogol World" instead. It's now available on Bandcamp. Give it a spin! x

Avocado’n’Toast
To create ‘the ultimate comic strip for millennials’, I gathered a list of tiresome “millennials are killing X” articles and made a page that generates speech bubbles over Jamie Smart’s artwork featuring Avocado, Toast and the delightful Mister Boomer.

A Random Walk Through The Library of Congress: LOC Serendipity
The Library of Congress contains vast troves of digital resources. LOC Serendipity is a website that simulates the experience of exploring a library and skimming eye-catching or interesting titles. From books like, "Dainty dishes for slender incomes," which contains a delicious recipe for beignets, to the oddball early-1800's "Memoirs of the notorious Stephen Burroughs of New Hampshire" to "The forgotten book," published in 2018, this tool enables serendipitous and deeply engaging discovery every day.

"Come With Me", original filmed micro-opera
"Come With Me" is a new opera written, composed, and filmed by me, and sung by me and a few friends (we're all professional singers) . The opera is micro in scale, at just over 12 minutes, but is packed with full-sized drama, passion, and singing. The concept behind composing and filming "Come With Me" to post on YouTube is to present opera in the same way as other contemporary music - short, sweet, and directly to your phone or computer.
