An atlas of thin film patterns.

While working as a MEMS engineer, I occasionally saw peculiar features on submicron suspended metal films. Cross sections acquired by focused ion beam showed that the films were intact but plastically deformed. Because some of the devices had been implanted in animals, I first attributed the features to biological exposure. However, they were later observed after experiments in saline. Some patterns even appeared during the fabrication process. Where did they come from?
