Fuck This Weather
The weather should be simple, so it fucking is.

I love The Fucking Weather, but got tired of its shortcomings. I made a better fucking weather app.

When I type in "dallas" I don't want "Dallas fucking Georgia", when I type in "New york" I don't want "New Fucking York Mills Minnesota" when I type in "Huston" I don't want "Huston fucking Idaho".

"LA" brings up lake minchumina, alaska, "boston" brings up Boston Georgia, "Miami" brings up Miami Arizona, and so on.

Fuck you.

But, great points—population size is a much more relevant sort than state name. Also: abbreviations or short names are useful.

Thanks.

Some of the random fucking places don't work - Miami Fucking Florida had question marks for the forecast temps (the fucking sun/cloud images were visible though). So did Rawlins Fucking Wyoming. There were also some other random fucking places that had the same problem. Also it's trivial but could the maps be draggable/movable?

I love that Carrollton Fucking Kentucky right now has some lame-ass fucking mist shit. The "what the fuck" in the search bar, the favicon. Nice fucking work.

Like the interface, hate the #666.
posted by edbles at 6:18 AM on December 23, 2009

oh man, getting an NYC page was brutal.

searches that worked:

New York, NY

searches that did not:

New York City, NY
New York City, New York
Manhattan
New York City
Manhattan, NY
Manhattan, New York
NYC

otherwise, this is pretty awesome.

Hah, no. Legal threats would be a bucket of lulz. I made a blatant rip-off, but only because I love it so fucking much.
posted by parhamr at 10:59 AM on December 23, 2009

Ok, assholes. Your prissy ‘nyc’ searches will work, and the results are returned by population order.

I was sold by "and shit".

I'm fucking disappointed that I can't be told what the fucking weather is like where I live, which is in motherfucking Australia. Any chance international weather will ever be added?
posted by Effigy2000 at 7:37 PM on December 23, 2009

I searched by motherfucking zip code and got my fucking weather first try. Too bad it doesn't work internationally though. That's fucked up.
posted by haunted by Leonard Cohen at 1:05 PM on December 24, 2009

Ok, I've sketched out the basics for international fucking cities. That'll be motherfucking complete this weekend.

This was pretty fucking entertaining

Houston fucking Texas

0 fucking degrees Fahrenheit and look outside the fucking window if you want to know the fucking weather

Very fucking cute, but I don't think it's ever been that fucking cold here, and it's fucking dark outside, so I can't see the fucking weather.
posted by zinfandel at 4:24 PM on December 26, 2009 [1 favorite]

Alright, assholes. International weather (sorta) fucking works.
posted by parhamr at 2:57 PM on December 27, 2009

This shit would be cool except there's fucking question marks instead of weather predictions. What the fuck is that fucking shit?
posted by serazin at 8:28 PM on December 30, 2009

My Canadian weather kinda fucking works, but it's in Fahrenheit. That fucking sucks.
posted by Midnight Rambler at 11:03 PM on December 30, 2009

Ok, metric temperatures are the motherfucking default for non-US locations.
posted by parhamr at 11:51 AM on December 31, 2009

Question mark for current fucking temperature: try a neighboring zip code (the DB is incomplete, but it is slowly filling in the blanks).

Question mark for fucking forecasts: blame those asswipes at NOAA (some locations aren't returning forecasts, I'm not sure why).

Wow, same-day or next-day service on all problems reported. Pretty fucking responsive (for a vulgarian.) [NOT VULGARIAN-IST]

Bookmarked =)
posted by headnsouth at 4:40 PM on January 3, 2010

I think the database of ZIP codes is finally complete. Please let me know if any locations consistently return incorrect or incomplete data.

Also: the forecasts from NOAA have the high and low temperatures reversed in the evenings and I do not understand it. WTF?!
posted by parhamr at 8:20 PM on January 5, 2010

Can this page set the fucking internet record for most fucking f-bombs on a single page?

Well, can it, you fucking fucker-fucks?

Great fucking project by the way.
posted by mds35 at 8:11 PM on January 6, 2010

Not fucking loading.
posted by ChurchHatesTucker at 9:52 AM on January 8, 2010

I fucking am fucking not in fucking Lockport, New Fucking York; not even fucking close. And after you fucking asked for my fucking location in fucking Firefox too. I'm in fucking To-fucking-ronto, and don't you fucking forget it. Fuck you, you fucking fuck, if that doesn't break the fucking guidelines for fucking maintaining a fucking healthy, fucking respectful fucking discussion by fucking focusing fucking comments on the fucking project - not on the fucking fucker that fucking fucked it.
posted by scruss at 6:23 PM on January 17, 2010

It fucking asks me for my fucking location on my fucking iPhone twice in a fucking row?

Frak, that sends off alarm bells.
posted by ChurchHatesTucker at 6:36 PM on January 17, 2010

I saw that on my phone, too. The first request was permission to let Safari use my location, the second was to let the site use my location.

There’s nothing sneaky happening behind the scenes. Geolocations are stored for four weeks so I can track usage patterns and ensure abuse doesn't occur (it’s a bit heavy on the server). http://www.google.com/search?q=great+circle+sql

After four weeks they disappear into the ether. http://fuckthisweather.kerplow.com/privacy

Fucking awesome. This is a fucking great interface for getting the weather. Fucking blows weather dot fucking com out of the water. Any chance you can make a fucking PG version so I can send it to my mother?

Seriously - love the website, I'd love to spread it around, but I wouldn't show my relatives unless you make a nice version.
posted by Salvor Hardin at 11:11 AM on January 20, 2010

Mebbe a Frak This Weather version? I'd get it for the nerd factor.
posted by ChurchHatesTucker at 7:29 PM on January 20, 2010

I’ve been thinking about the reuse potential. Form and function are pretty well separated out, so I could have a regular weather app (vulgarity free) running on the same code.

I’m busy till the end of the month.
posted by parhamr at 10:37 AM on January 21, 2010

From the comments above, it sounds like on an iPhone it can figure out location automatically and it wants to do that on Firefox too - but I'm not getting an option to do that on my G1. Is that because it's not asking, or because I fucked up some setting on my end?
posted by nickmark at 1:26 PM on January 22, 2010

Cool. Well, post an update here if you do get around to making a PG version. Awesome job...you know, on making the best fucking weather site ever.
posted by Salvor Hardin at 6:23 AM on January 23, 2010

nickmark—the geolocator is JavaScript-based. it should work on your G1, but I might have not built it right.

Salvor—here’s a less-vulgar (but awkwardly phrased) version: http://theweathersucks.kerplow.com/
posted by parhamr at 2:16 PM on January 24, 2010

Fuck me, this would be much fucking better if it supported fucking international locations. Nevertheless I've fucking bookmarked and voted for it.
posted by jonesor at 2:51 PM on January 26, 2010

Awesome! Thanks! Now I can send it to my extended family :) I think I'll still use the fucking version, because it makes me laugh when I check the weather.
posted by Salvor Hardin at 5:07 PM on February 19, 2010

Love this so much. I've been using it on my Droid perfectly. I've got a shortcut to it on my desktop, and it looks great vertical and horizontal.
