How I Was Banned in Croatia
In the immediate aftermath of the bloody Balkan wars of the 90s, a penniless science-fiction author was hired to write the official biography of Croatia's President, Franjo Tudjman.

Chicago musician attacked defending woman
Here's a series of articles I have written this month while covering a tragedy that has a happy ending. Matthew Leone, bass player for the Chicago band, Madina Lake, was attacked when he tried to aid a woman being choked on the street by her husband. He was badly injured with no health insurance. Fans worldwide have been donating aid and the Smashing Pumpkins are playing a benefit show for him tonight in Chicago.

My Father's Photos from 1945-1946 on a U.S. Coast Guard Troop Transport
My late father in 1945 at age 17 joined the U.S. Coast Guard, and served on the USS General H.F. Hodges, a troop transport. Last year I found 200+ photos of his time in the Coast Guard and had them scanned. The ship traveled around the world a few times and the photos show shipboard life as well as scenes from shore leave, including Egypt, India and New York City.

Adam For Alameda
I am running for City Council in Alameda, California. There are two open seats, and I think I have a good shot at winning! Due to corruption, cronyism and other mismanagement plaguing our city, I have decided to step up and offer my services to the community. Your support is gratefully appreciated!

Digital camera blog
After 5 years of digital photography as a hobby, I realized I'd spent a lot of time buying and selling gear online. Hopefully this will be helpful to others who find themselves in the same predicament.

Chew Chew Chew Redux
You may remember the AskMe describing the prick who gums bikes locked up outside of my apartment. In response to the demands of MeFites, emilyd22222 and I have created a blog to document our progress in tracking and capturing the one we now refer to as The Gum Bandit. We document gummings and strategic progress. There's opportunity for troubleshooting for technologically savvy Mefites, as well as some miscellany for fun.

Chance Ranch
Two girls in Central Texas. Chickens, garden, rabbits; doing our best to work toward self-sufficiency and learning a lot along the way. Local food, local love.

The Whistling Monster
I teach music at an elementary school, and the students and I spent the year creating a long-form musical story, which became a CD. It's based on a folk tale from an Amazon tribe. All the music, singing and sounds are by the kids.

Nine Inch Niles - The Seattleward Spiral
A bizarre auto-mashup album I made today using Echo Nest Remix: it's a frankensteinien reconstruction of The Downward Spiral using only a few minutes of audio from the show Frasier.

indexical (a photoblog)
I am a visual artist in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and this is my photoblog. I have been posting fairly regularly over the past year (233 photos so far). I think of my photoblog as a photographic notebook, a tool I use to record and develop visual ideas over time. It is also a good excuse to wander around with a camera.

Contemporary Psychiatry
My grandfather, Dr John Lovett-Doust was a physiological psychiatrist in Ontario, Canada from 1952 until 1980; sadly I never met him before he died 1980. When our family was recently able to acquire a copy of a ten-part CBC radio series he created for the program University of the Air (precursor to the Ideas program) on the subject of 'contemporary psychiatry,' it was for myself and many of the other grandchildren the first time we had heard his voice. While the site is a work in progress, please enjoy sampling the recordings.

Swearing with spices
My selection of photographs from supermarkets. I sneak in and arrange the spices into swear words, which makes me laugh. I have only found that Tescos has the required packaging to make this work, but if you know different please email me via the site and I will take your contributions. Only a few updates at the minute, but many more rude ideas floating around my head.

Plywood Recumbent Trike, No Welding
I built a recumbent (delta style) trike out of three salvaged bikes, plywood and other miscellaneous stuff. No welding. The link provides all the details of the project. Inspiration for you to build one, too.

Prime Focus
A little tumblelog about astrophotography, both professional (e.g., the Hubble and other space- and ground-based observatories) and amateur, with a certain amount of geeking out about the equipment and the science. I set this up to prevent my personal blog from being completely taken over by look-at-the-pretty-space-pictures posts, which I'm now doing here with reckless abandon.

Ask Sleeves - Your MP3 search engine
Ask Sleeves is a search engine focused exclusively on MP3 audio files. In the spring of 2010, while digging in the basement of a Silicon Valley mascot consignment store, I stumbled upon an incredible find. There, crumpled into a ball in the deepest corner of the basement was a pile of men's clothing with a complicated story. Although the wrinkled, discarded pile still smelled faintly of butler, there was no indication that this suit was special.
