Henchman's Helper
This is a thing i was inspired to make by an active desktop item that was floating around a long time ago. The idea is this is the online version of that giant wall that the bad guys in movies, evil scientists, mad doctors etc. stare at when they plot. It's got a sinister feel to it and I am adding new modules each week.

Dynamic Journalism Job Feeds
I'm a graduate student at the Medill School of Journalism where I and many of my friends are always interested in fresh leads for post-graduation journalism jobs. So we've set up a page of dynamic job feeds for entry-level newspaper, newmedia, magazine, and broadcast job feeds using Indeed.com, which scrapes all the major job sites. Setting up a bunch of feeds like this is nothing new, but I don't think there's anything quite like this for journalism jobs on the web. if you're ever wondered about working as a reporter or editor somewhere, drop by and check out a few. there's always something good from the New York Times or WashPost.

Think
Last week, I finished a small project at work called Think. I thought the Mac OS X MeFi crowd would dig it. Imagine if WriteRoom were available for other applications. Y'know, block out the Desktop and other apps, focus your attention, GTD. Sure, it's been done before, but I wasn't really happy with how it had been done before. Upon seeing a Mac OS X Hints thread where someone wanted an app like this, but seeing how meh the available options were, I decided to write one that felt "good". The manual's got a lot of tips and outlines the general workflow. So far, response has been either:
- "I don't get it."
- "Go back to Windows you n00b."
- "Holy shit. I can bring other stuff forward for a second and then throw it right back away. Holy shit, and there're keystrokes for it."
Of course, I prefer that last one there. It's free, so have a download and give it a spin.

schoolr.com
After a long night of continuous acronym and dictionary searches, I decided to set this site up. It's one page mash-up of various academic related search engines and resources. The site also features a unit converter, translator, and a citation builder provided by NCSU.

Super Bowl Commercial Extravaganza
Many, many talented coworkers and myself have created a Super Bowl minisite at iFilm, where the commercials from the big game will be posted online just minutes after appearing on air. The real fun begins tomorrow, but for now you can also watch every Super Bowl commercial from the past five years, as well as outtakes, sneak peaks, and the so-called "banned" ads. Organized by advertiser, year and our esteemed "editor's picks."

The Transaction
This an article I wrote. It's the cover story for this week's Philadelphia City Paper. It's about hookers, blow and credit cards. (Approved by Jessamyn and Matt for posting)

Dubya The Menace
I saw The Nietzsche Family Circus a few months ago and I thought the something could be done in a similar manner for the purpose of political satire. I still need to add more quotes to the database, but it is a work in progress.

PhotoSlop
A daily image mashup (lumpy), usually comic-strip-esque, sometimes political, always topical, featuring famous figures like the Pre-sid-ent, the Pope, the Speaker of the House, Dictators both (dead and alive), CEOs, Pop stars, cartoon characters and common folk too. And also that K-Fed guy, because he's an easy target. Poor Photoshop skills never looked so funny!

Fine art black-and-white photography
I just finished an online gallery of my photography. Only 20 images in there at the moment, but I wanted to get the site up and running before working to get my older photos into the gallery. I work entirely in film, so it takes a little time for me to get the scans done. I'm also trying to make a little revenue by selling prints, so I'd love to hear feedback about my prices and the e-commerce part of the site.

Crystal Palace String Quartet
We just relaunched our website with a new, hopefully cleaner look. I borrowed some ideas from mefi music on the sound clip page -- I hope Matt doesn't mind!

The Salton Sea
I recently drove to the Salton Sea in the desert wastelands of South Eastern California. The trip took in Salvation Mountain, Slab City, and the communities surrounding the northern half of the sea; this project is a flickr photoset of the 90+ images with captions for each making a story of the trip.

idproxy.net
I've been playing around with OpenID a lot recently, and idproxy.net is my latest experiment. It's an OpenID provider that you can log in to with your Yahoo! account, thereby enabling any Yahoo! user to log in to any OpenID supporting site (for example Zooomr or Ma.gnolia.com).

A revamped
Last fall I became the new cohost of the call-in radio show A Way With Words, a weekly hour-long question-and-answer program about language, grammar, word origins, and related topics. We've been working undercover ever since to take it in new directions, changing the show in great ways. Well, the first shows in the new season—my first as permanent new cohost—air Saturday, January 20, and then every week thereafter. They're broadcast from KPBS in San Diego via radio, streaming, and podcast, as well as on WFPL in Louisvile and on the Wisconsin Public Radio network.

Bulgarian Folk Orgy
MeFi's own mykescipark will be sharing way too much of what he loves about Bulgarian Folk music on on Harvard University's radio station, WHRB (95.3 FM / whrb.org) from 10pm Friday to 9am Saturday and 10pm Saturday to 11am Sunday. If you're not in the area, catch it streaming or revel at the oddity of the WHRB Orgy tradition.

How I'm Benefiting the Artists of New Orleans
Over the course of the past four years, I've been touring the country and diving into the world of photography. I've driven enough miles now that I have figuratively circumnavigated the world at the equator. I'm on my third camera, and funny enough, my third car. The end result is the creation of a series of books called "Distance Til Empty", 8 volumes of books filled with photography from around the country, and even a few from Canada. I'm very proud of this achievement. Very proud. However, that being said, I'm proudest of one particular volume...

Volume VI of Distance Til Empty focuses on Louisiana. My travels in the swamps, my exploration into other cultures, and a few trips into New Orleans. As a matter of fact, I've been there before and after the Hurricane, and I've seen how the city has been forever altered. I've seen what it's done to the people and the culture, and more precisely, I've seen what it's done to the art world down there.

Therefore, since NOLA has given me so much in terms of inspiration over the years, I'm paying her back. All proceeds from Volume VI will be donated to the visual artists of New Orleans.

So if you end up picking up a copy of this book, you're not just doing it for one artist, you're doing it for a city of artists. It's not very often that doing so little can do so much for so many.

Black Dahlia 60th Anniversary Lost Weekend
Sixty years ago next week, an obscure yet lovely young woman named Elizabeth Short became the first and most grisly victim in a series of unsolved woman killings that terrorized post-war L.A. Her bisected body, abandoned in a trash-strewn field in Leimert Park, became the obsession and inspiration for thousands of cops, true crime fanatics, visual artists, writers and filmmakers. From January 11-16, the anniversary of Elizabeth Short's captivity and murder, downtown L.A. will host a series of startling events inspired by the crime and its eternally fascinating victim, including screenings, art exhibitions, readings, live cabaret and Crime Bus tours.
