The List of Youth Speakers and Inspiring Young People to Invite to Your Conference or Event
I got inspired by Personism's list of inspiring women speakers and developed my own list for young people that would make great conference speakers or guests. I've noticed that youths (particularly those from third-world countries) tend to get underrepresented at anything that's not specifically a youth conference, and after a while of asking "why" I decided to just build a list. It's growing quite steadily though the list is skewed towards Australasia - feel free to nominate anyone under 30 that should be here!

The Orange Swan Review
This is a book review blog, which consists of my personal essays about/reactions to the things I read. My reading materials are a very mixed bag, but I'm working on a long-term project to review all the Newbery Medal Winners since 1922, so this site might be of interest to those who like children's and young adult literature. It's not, strictly speaking, a new project, having been originally launched last fall, but I wanted to wait until I had a fair amount of content before posting it here. To date, I have something like 27 essays posted.

Hundreds of hand-drawn turkeys!
As teaching assistant for a large (700+) class at upenn.edu, I was put in charge of photocopying the midterm. I added "Draw a turkey" to the last page; here are the results. Gobble, gobble!

Word Plus One
Fun with flash fiction... Starting November 1, I will write a new story every day for a year. Each day, the number of words in the story will increase by exactly one. Yes, the first story is only one word long.

The Best Stuff in the World
The Best Stuff in the World is an open, organic, polymorphous site which, depending on the user, could take on diverse forms and meanings. The site simply asks you to input your "best stuff" in the world: whether it be a song that inspires you, your favourite little Indian restaurant or the best explication of Kantian aesthetics ... it's up to you!

Pedestria
A new photoblog of people passing on the street, with impressionist writeups. Intended as a five-days-a-week regular feature. (Sort of a people-watching spiritual companion laundryroom swapmeet.) Feedback, suggestions, criticism welcome.

1. write two sentences. 2. create tension between them. 3. define
Years ago, I crafted a creative-writing activity called "Two Sentences." You write a sentence, and then write a second one that somehow creates tension (conflict, surprise twist, contradiction, etc.) with the first sentence. Two Sentences became popular on a couple of writing sites I used to visit, but I forgot all about it until recently. Then I noticed this MeFi project, got inspired, and created a site for Two Sentences.

EXAMPLES 1: The darkness completely enveloped him. He suspected there was more to blinking than this.

EXAMPLE 2: I'm leaving you. I'll be back tomorrow.

Snakes on Film
Some people nitpick movies or TV shows for historical accuracy or continuity. Me, I nitpick 'em for their snakes. Seeing someone scream in terror at a snake that I can immediately identify as a harmless species you can buy at the local pet store for sixty bucks spoils my fun, so I'm spreading the joy. Snakes on a You-Know-What has had its snakes debunked and profiled; I'll do the same for as many other films, movies and short videos as I can track down. For that niche who likes both snakes and movies. (Yeah, him.)

The Harvey Girls Redesign
I've redesigned The Harvey Girls site (if you don't know them, they are our own melissa may and sleepy pete, and they are awesome - go listen on MeFi Music or download some tunes from the music pages!). Please let me know if you see anything funky happening with the layout - and if so, screen shots plus resolution / platform / browser information will be much appreciated. And by the way, if you feel unhappy that you can't leave comments at the site, check back a little later... we have plans to add a wordpress blog in the near future.

Reviewing Every Criterion DVD
I am slowly watching and reviewing every movie in the Criterion Collection's catalog. I say slowly because it is going to take me 3 or 4 years to watch and review them all. In addition to my own thoughts on the films, I also link to the best online resources concerning the film or its director. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks for looking.
