Links To The Damn Paper
Hello and welcome to Links to the Damn Paper, an open discussion community showcasing the best in freely-available biology research. If you’ve ever tried to have a discussion about science on the Web and been stymied and frustrated by inaccessible articles, misrepresentation of research in science journalism, or a community that seems uninterested in digging into the actual research behind a topic, then welcome: you are our people. If you’ve ever wished for a place to talk about the Science of Life where you could be sure that the actual articles were available, where compelling research was presented in a way that allowed it to speak for itself, and where you could discuss science with actual scientists and with other people who are passionate about science for its own sake, then you have found your haven.

PITH: Extremely short stories
I wrote a book of 100 very (very) short stories. Each story is around 100 words. They're mostly all dark/strange/grim, but some of them are funny, too. I self published and released it this week. It's available as ebook, paperback or free PDF download and released under Creative Commons license.

Houndton Tabby
In anticipation of the season 3 premiere of Downton Abbey, I've begun a series of portraits based upon the memorable characters from the show. Depicted as dogs and cats, naturally. I am selling them as prints in my Etsy shop.

Archie's Recipes
When my grandparents passed away my family rediscovered an old family recipe book that my great grandfather wrote by hand in an old ledger.

Esotouric's Los Angeles Historic Preservation "25 for 2012"
From Esotouric, the offbeat Los Angeles tour company, here's a very opinionated list of the past year's most notable historic preservation gains, losses... and those bittersweet moments that hover somewhere in the middle and keep us up nights.

Uncle Mark 2013 Gift Guide & Almanac
This is my 10th annual gift guide, recommending purchases for the upcoming holidays. I took a different approach this year, though, after a conversation I had during the cleanup after Hurricane Sandy. It's a much shorter guide. Here's the PDF download.

Ever wanted to learn how to pickle? Or stargaze? Or build kites, read tarot, make cheese, or bind books? It's always fun to learn something new, but sometimes you need a tiny nudge. Dabbler picks a topic every month and sends a little package to your inbox: notes, links, book recommendations, and everything else to help get you on your way.

Metafilter Podcast Transcripts
There's an ongoing effort to transcribe episodes of the Metafilter Podcast. Using Fanscribed, we now have a good platform for letting people drop in and transcribe 30 seconds at a time, without special software. We've been using Fanscribed for a few months now; we've taken care of a dozen older episodes already.

Studies in Semicolons: On the habits, tools and technologies of doing idea work better
I've started a blog about the world of technology available for academics, researchers and other people who deal with ideas for a living. While there's plenty out there on technology for writers and programmers, I wanted to bring a special focus toward brainstorming, document management and notetaking. I'm gradually expanding into non-technology stuff as the blog grows and progresses.

Pen & Oink
Pen & Oink is a blog on children's illustration I started with two other illustrators. We'll have interviews, tutorials, and book features, among other posts. There's a lot of content about children's books, but we also plan to cover magazines, surface design, animation, and anything else with illustrated content for children.

9,308 photographs of North Dakota
I got the most detailed map of North Dakota I could find, visited every dot on the map, and photographed something at every single spot.

TakeNote: An Exploration of Notetaking in Harvard University Collections
TakeNote is a virtual exhibition of historical notes--and note-like things--found in the collections of 13 Harvard University libraries, curated by leading scholars in the history of the book, and sponsored by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The exhibition itself--available in a grid or sortable view--features downloadable high-resolution images, commenting, and tagging. There is also a selection of interpretive itineraries through the exhibit, written by experts in the field (excepting myself), and a bibliography of links and sources related to notetaking. The project is linked to the Take Note Conference, due to take place at Radcliffe (in Cambridge, Mass.) on Nov. 1st and 2nd.

Want to find out how MeFites are pronouncing MeFi?
After years of studying these shibboleths, and tracking my research progress here, I'm happy to share some data results from the 2010 survey. My first published article, Sociophonetic Variation in an Internet Place Name is available in Names: A Journal of Onomastics special issue on Names, Naming and the Internet (Maney Publishing). Enjoy!

WikiWak - Yummy slices of Wikipedia, six at a wak!
If you were one of those kids who used to enjoy browsing the encyclopedia for random stuff, this may be of interest. Punch the big blue WAK!, and WikiWak will pop six pages from Wikipedia in separate windows (you gotta allow popups from WikiWak). Unlike Wikipedia's "Random Page" link, WikiWak pulls articles from Wikipedia's "Featured" and "Good" categories. So your liklihood of coming across something interesting to read is quite a bit higher. Why six pages? Well, that appears to be enough for a single sit upon the porcelain pedestal.

Visualizing the Web Index
Today you might have noticed Tim Berners-Lee and the Web Foundation (previously) announcing the launch of the Web Index, a global ranking for measuring the benefits and impact of the Web on the world's nations and peoples. If you've visited the website, you might also have played with the visualizations, brought to you by a couple of Mefites.

I Bought Ad Space in the DC Metro to Tell Politicians the Harm Their Incessant Rancor is Producing
I'm tired of the spin and the half-truths. While politicians jockey for position and influence, Americans are suffering. I'm taking my Chamomile Tea Party posters to the public! I've rented ad space in Washington, DC's Metro and I've posted the first of two ads on their back-lit signs.

Carbon 7
A site for my new band. The design is old skool, but the meat of the project is the 7 hours-worth of recordings on the "Listen" page.
