From Garching to Innsbruck in 7 days
I’ve recently finished my master’s degree in computer science at the Technical University of Munich and will walk to my hometown in Austria over the course of seven days, starting tomorrow (14 September, 9:00 CEST). This website is my hiking journal.

Pokémon in Space, Pokémon in the NYPL
It's a pair of Twitter bots: Pokémon in the NYPL, which sends Pokémon into the depths of the New York Public Library Digital Collections, and Pokémon in Space!, which uses the Astronomy Picture of the Day as a guide for Pokémon space exploration.

confirmshaming
when a site asks you to sign up for their thing and then the 'no thank you' link is some hot garbage.

Eudaimoneers is an invitation-only boutique ad network for indie gaming publishers and gaming fans
Display advertising on the web is kind of broken. It's become an escalating war of all against all, and gamers are the adblockingest demographic there is. Eudaimoneers wants to call a truce, bring back a little trust and integrity, and make things better for indie gaming site owners, for the gamers who visit their sites, for advertisers who want to reach them, and do some good in the process: we will donate 10% of our revenues to charities selected by network members every month.

HOW many eggs?
So, my friend and I, (both librarians and enthusiastic eaters) who did a previous food-related project, have a new one where we make things we've always wanted to eat from our favorite books. We are far from the first to have this idea, but we get kind of intense about it.

A new unofficial website for Vernon, Vermont
In 2014, the state of Vermont passed an updated Open Meetings law that required, among other things, that towns with official websites post minutes of board and committee meetings within 5 calendar days. While most towns have no problem with that (the minutes are required to be available in 5 days at the Clerk's office, anyway), some of them decided to turn off their website entirely rather than comply — including my home town, Vernon. Unofficial websites are now popping up in some of these towns, and with a co-conspirator I've just launched this one for Vernon.

me irl
Me irl is a subreddit where every post must be titled "me irl". The prompt is to post "selfies of the soul". It has 250k subscribers, and is responsible for several of the highest scoring links on reddit of all time, including #7. This is the burden I carry with me.

The Mosquito Crate: a CAPTCHA Exclusively for Spammers
This summer, our forums were inundated with spam. Lots and lots of spam. Because I can't mail the spammers a crate of mosquitos, I made a CAPTCHA that only they can see, and that can't possibly be answered correctly.

Monkey Pop: The Experiment
Monkey Pop is a local 2-player game you play on a shared keyboard. You can play it right in the browser, or download a Mac or Windows version. Computer only, no mobile version, sorry. It's sort of a retro single-screen platformer in the vein of Joust or the original Mario Bros, except with monkeys and saws and brain control helmets.

LED Array Prototype
This is a 10ft x10ft 3200 RGB pixel LED array that I have assembled in my living room. It's a prototype for a 10,000 pixel version I'm building for our Burning Man camp, Be There Now. I plan on using it as a sound reactive party light as well as an ego stroking Giant Selfie Machine. I am not a lighting designer or a professional LED nerd, I'm just a guy with a big living room and I'm not afraid to try stuff. Videos liquid effect scattered pixels free form a music driven test

Shakespeare Syndrome
I wrote a story for The Message about what's claimed to be a previously undiscovered portrait of Shakespeare (spoiler alert: it isn't) and the obsession with filling the gaps in our knowledge about the Bard.

Reporting, Reviewing, and Responding to Harassment on Twitter
For three weeks last November, Women, Action, and the Media accepted harassment reports that they escalated to Twitter, collecting data on the experience of harassment and the process of reporting it. Our team of academics have published a comprehensive report on what they found.

How to built an e-book library you can touch
I built something physical out of my Kindle highlights to have an e-book library with the moments from the books I wish to remember and to have something on the shelf to talk about when friends visit and want to have a look and talk on what I've been reading lately. It’s a prototype of what I would like to see from publishers.

On Nine Lives
