Digital Covers for Over 400 Children's Books
I'm digitizing the covers of a significant portion of my children's book collection and posting them to my Flickr account. Among the items in that collection is a book shaped card game called Dr. Quack which is sort of like Mad Libs. I've parsed out the story and the accompanying cards into a twitter feed just for snicks and giggles. The rest of the books are typically either science books, textbooks, or early examples of cross media licensing based on comic strips, radio shows, TV shows, or movies.

WTH? Athens
I got so tired of driving around my town wondering "What the hell is that?" that I suggested a column for my local alternative newspaper. Shockingly, they took me up on it. It's not just for people who live in Athens, though. If you notice things that other people don't even see,maybe you'll like it. My favorites are "The Millitant Next Door," "The Rules of the Mall," "Carwash Curry," "Grave Situation," and "Meat Sales and Butt-Smears." It's a bunch of love letters to my great little town. Hope you enjoy.

YOU'RE NEXT
I produced a horror movie called YOU'RE NEXT. It comes out this weekend in the US, and in the rest of the world over the next few weeks. Critics even like it, which is pretty rare for a horror film these days. So if you like horror movies, go see it. If you don't like horror movies, go see it anyway and help support MeFi's own me.

Chicago Public Schools...data for parents to help them advocate for their school
Building on the work with CPS Apples to Apples, I joined forces with Chicago's Open Data Institute to help shine a light on the real data around Chicago Public Schools anticipated historically large number of school closings. The data is being used by parents and community groups to ask targeted, educated questions about the schools on the closing and receiving lists, and to educate parents about how District policy affects their local school's staffing, class sizes, etc. Some of the data being visualized exists in disconnected sites, some of it has had to be "liberated" from PDF's in order to be used. The team is hoping to extend its work at some point into a project called SchoolCircles, a site that will help public school parents in Chicago (and with code that can be repurposed for other districts) understand the data that affects their schools (budgets, staffing, student performance and mobility, utilization) more completely, as well as quickly run "what if" scenarios for how proposed changes to district policy would affect their specific school.

Myrln Books: publishing my late father's fiction.
With the fifth anniversary of my father's death approaching this April 10, I've spent the past three months diving into some of his WordPerfect for DOS files. As of today, three titles have been published via Kindle Direct Publishing (without DRM), and I've begun the process of prepping for print publication via CreateSpace.

Midnight Rider - A short film
I recently published my short story collection American Death Songs. "Midnight Rider," starring Ryan Hurst (Opie from Sons of Anarchy), is a filmed monologue of the collection's opening short story, the tale of a stoned man being chased by the cops when he lets the radio decide his fate. It's a funny, sad, weird ride. Directed by Nina Corrado, music by Blake Neely.

The Atlantic Ocean Comedy & Music Fest (aka Boatparty.biz)
I've been spending the last few months putting together this festival-on-a-cruise-ship. It's three nights in the Caribbean, and three huge shows. Two comedy, one music. The music show's got John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, Nellie McKay, John Roderick and Dan Deacon. The comedy shows have (among others) John Hodgman, Al Madrigal, Marc Maron, Maria Bamford, Nick Thune, Kristen Schaal, Kurt Braunohler and Josie Long.

This site came about after a friend attempted to eat 6 Arby's roast beef sandwiches in an hour, on a dare. Halfway through, an argument ensued about the terms... and we found ourselves wishing we had some kind of formal document, listing out all the rules of the bet. In a nutshell, SpitShake lets you create a free, customizable contract that you can print out for everyone involved to sign.

Ebook Index of Free Ebooks for the Kindle
My parents got a Kindle for Christmas, and I've looked into ways for them to read public domain books from outside Amazon on it, and the interfaces for browsing for books and transferring them are ... non-optimal. I found the Magic Catalog, an ebook index of Project Gutenberg books, linked up so that you can immediately download books and add them to your Kindle, without using a computer or Amazon. It's in a useless order, though – it's not sorted by the book title, or by author. So I thought I'd take a shot at fixing that. Here’s the prototype, sorted by the author's last name. This is my first ebook, so please forgive the rough edges.

PITH: Extremely short stories
I wrote a book of 100 very (very) short stories. Each story is around 100 words. They're mostly all dark/strange/grim, but some of them are funny, too. I self published and released it this week. It's available as ebook, paperback or free PDF download and released under Creative Commons license.

BUNK - a rock video for Nardwuar + the Evaporators
BUNK is a rock-video I recently directed, produced and helped animate for a fellow known as Nardwuar The Human Serviette (who the world really should have heard of by now). His band is called the Evaporators and their sound is best thought of as Ramones-ish old-school punk by way of Saturday morning cartoons ... hence the old-school cut + paste non-digital (for the most part) animation.

I've just launched my ELEVENTH annual Oscar "Pick 'Em contest over at my website. Every year the winner receives a custom, one-of-a-kind sock monkey creation. (Previously: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.) This year's prize is an unprecendented FOUR Avenger Monkeys: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and Incredible Hulk. They took me FOREVER to make, and I can't even begin to think how I'll top it next year. (No, brain, we are not making 12 dwarves and a hobbit.) Everyone is welcome to enter the contest!

Dr Sketchy's Anti-Art School: The Documentary
in 2010 I (along with many others) were interviewed for a documentary on the formation of the world-wide life-drawing cabaret show I helped found. After two years on the festival circuit, it is now available for all and sundry on Vimeo. Interviews with Akynos, Gal Friday, Amber Ray, Molly Crabappple, and more. NSFWish video and audio.
