Across Africa for Love and Glory
My book Crossing the Heart of Africa just came out today. It's about retracing the 1898-1900 route of the British explorer Ewart Grogan from South Africa to Sudan. He did it to prove to his girlfriend's stepfather that he was worthy of marriage; I did it in part to dispel my own pre-wedding jitters. So it's an adventure-travel-history-romance-memoir. There's a photo gallery, animated map and excerpt. (For anyone who noticed a strange theme to my AskMe questions over the years - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 - this is why. And thanks!)

The Captured Bird

In a brand new venture, I'm hearkening back to the golden age of radio horror, when voices like Arch Oboler, Boris Karloff and Vincent Price ruled the airwaves. I've recorded two albums so far: MicroHorror, on which I read my own original short-short horror stories, and Legends of Horror, on which I read three classic stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce and H.P. Lovecraft in all-new dramatic performances. Streaming is free from Bandcamp, and downloads are pay-what-you-like. Dim the lights, curl up in your favorite coffin and open your mind to horror.

Southern Tier 2010
I am cycling from San Diego CA to St. Augustine FL, starting Sept 18. I'll be writing about the experience en route through the nü-media smorgasbord of flickr, twitter, and a blog (theme of my own design, not quite ready for prime time). The route I'll be taking is known as the Southern Tier. This is a self-supported tour. I'll be camping along the way, staying in homes when possible, and hotels when necessary.

White Man's Heaven
White Man's Heaven is the very recently published work of my fiancee on racial violence in the Southern Ozarks by the University of Arkansas Press. From 1894 to 1909, a series of lynchings and race riots helped to permanently expel some African American communities and terrorize others in Southwest Missouri and northern Arkansas. White Man's Heaven covers the lynchings in Monett, Pierce City, Joplin, and Springfield, Missouri, as well the violence and expulsions in Harrison, Arkansas. This is the Wordpress website I created to promote it.

My mother's novel
In the late 1960's, my mom, young and naive, was arrested entering the US with a little bit of pot. She was thrown into a Texas jail, and threatened with years behind bars. This experience ended up being the basis of an experimental / poetic novel she wrote during the '70s, which was meant to be published in the '80s, but things fell apart and it never actually made it to press. Shortly after that, my parents divorced, and then a few years later, my mother was diagnosed with MS. The novel has been sitting on the back burner for a long time, but is finally available. (It's like time travel.)
