I promised MeFi some information about singing mice a long time ago...

I've just graduated with my PhD! In my department, PhD defenses are traditionally open to the public: anyone who wants to can attend. Because of COVID, mine was held via Zoom this year, and I was able to record it and transcribe/caption it so that anyone who would like can watch. [more inside]

Hit the High Notes singing game

Sing to your browser and see how high you can go compared with 27 famous singers. I've been working on this for a while, struggling to get robust cross-browser pitch detection, then eventually found a combination of hacks/libraries that does the trick.

"Finding Connection" - indie 'a cappella' musical theater

"Finding Connection" is an original 40 minute indie musical theater production about finding personal connection in a digitally connected world. The production was filmed by the composer and actors on their cellphones and a camcorder. Here is the link to the YouTube playlist, containing 11 songs and 7 dialogues. The musical score features the human voice exclusively - there are no other instruments. Each song is different, ranging from musical theater, spoken word, metal, rap, and modern choral. I am the composer and film-maker, and I also sing/rap in some of the songs. [more inside]

Same Rat, Different Hat

The debut record from Out of System Transfer, a neo-old-timey band who sing punk-influenced folk songs about the assassination of William McKinley, hitting cops in the head with a brick, and riding the subway. Their sound has been compared to the Holy Modal Rounders, Mojo Nixon, and Mischief Brew. With physical media sales becoming less viable, it made little sense to get CDs printed (plus, no one in the band even had a working CD player), but it also felt wrong to forego the great potential offered by album covers and liner notes, not to mention the feeling of having a tangible thing for fans to have. Thus, the record was released as a zine, (also bundled with the download as a pdf) with original artwork commissioned for each song by various Brooklyn-based artists. [more inside]

GLTI.CH Karaoke

is a virtual jukebox oozing with time-delayed, glitchy fun. Streaming live over the web, London and Kumamoto will be joined in a sing off to end all sing offs. The first GLTI.CH KARAOKE event will laugh in the face of the nine hour time difference, of poor bandwidth, bad lip syncing, and terrible foreign language translations. All that matters is that the interwebs keep running and the participants keep on singing. From our first event we will encourage a whole series GLTI.CH Karaoke happenings. Using webstreaming software our eventual aim is to link up multiple cities across the globe for an all-out, Noon til Noon, 24 hour Karaoke marathon. This means we need YOU to help host future events, with all proceeds raised going to The Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund. [more inside]
