In honor of the death of vine, here's an excerpt from a live performance where I found and mixed vine video loops. Hire me for your weird media art shows and weddings!
I filmed (and performed in a few) nearly 40 custom-written love songs for a bunch of strangers on the internet. They were customers of the company I work for, and we wanted to thank them for saying lovely things about us. [more inside]
A short play I wrote for a holiday-themed new works festival. Some of the video quality is a bit shaky, but the whole play is there!
I made a video putting together the Hannibal Lecter scene from Manhunter (1986) and the remake Red Dragon (2006) as a way to compare direction and performance for a scene that is nearly identical in both movies.
Ladies and Gentlemen is a multimedia performance duo combining guitar and live, remixed video. Our performances are incredibly difficult to document, so we put together these videos as an attempt to give some insight into our process, as well as to explore the intersection of composition, musical performance, and video-as-instrument. An immersive nocturnal ambient sound experience created and performed by yours truly. Mixing hundreds of field recordings, soundscapes, shortwave radio interceptions, natural drones, found audio, and more, it's a wide-ranging sonic odyssey which reflects ecologies of many kinds: environmental (ocean sounds, wildlife, atmospheres), religious (calls to prayer and ritual singing), radiophonic (data transmissions, Morse code, folkloric music) and beyond. The Flight is performed live and, like a traditional performance, adapts to the interests, affinities, and response of its audience. [more inside]
Everyone complains about how ridiculously simple DJing is, but no one does anything about it. Sound like a pro on your phone by moving your body. It's like DJ karaoke and even your mom will like it.
in 2010 I (along with many others) were interviewed for a documentary on the formation of the world-wide life-drawing cabaret show I helped found. After two years on the festival circuit, it is now available for all and sundry on Vimeo. Interviews with Akynos, Gal Friday, Amber Ray, Molly Crabappple, and more. NSFWish video and audio. Directed by Peter Bolte (14 min)
The thing started with a simple question: I have a savings plan without a fixed interest rate I regularly put money in. I even put extra money in it if there is something left at the end of the month or if my bank advisor tells me so. But when it came to examining the result I was left alone. All I could see was the actual balance. No one would tell me if my savings run well or not. So how do I find out the performance of my savings? What is the "real" interest rate I have got? Looking at Teen Paranormal Romance books, shows, and movies, and particularly at how they present ideas of gender performance and relationship models. (Here's the inaugural post, where I lay out what the plan basically is. Highlights so far include this particularly cogent defense of (at least some aspects of) Twilight, and this epic takedown of Hush, Hush.) And today, we've started a new, 144-week-long project: watching and discussing each and every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. MeFi bonus: named via AskMe (thanks again, argonauta)!
I'm working on a 3-month trip to San Francisco to explore gender, sexuality, love, and relationships via performance from the perspective of a female queer migrant minority. Here I'll be documenting the project, my progress towards it, and how people can support me. If you're in San Francisco give me a yell!
My friend Cristin Norine is spending one month living in a gallery, alone, that's in plain sight on a busy street in Portland, Or. She can't leave or have visitors, and is only communicating to others via social media. [more inside]
