Halloween Radio Special: The Gallows Ballads Project

I've mentioned The Gallows Ballads Project on Metafilter previously. These sheets were sold at public hangings in Victorian London, and each contains a set of verses describing the condemned man's crime and punishment. Now, I've made an hour-long radio documentary on the project, which London's Resonance FM put out as a Halloween Special last night. In the programme, I tell the true crime stories behind eight of the goriest ballad sheets I've collected and play some great new performances of these century-old songs by modern musicians like The Jetsonics, Pete Morton and Elsa "Bride of Frankenstein" Lanchester. I think you'll like it.

Mose the Fireboy

A history of a once-famous, now-mostly-forgotten character from Civil War-era New York. Mose the Fireboy was a Bowery B'hoy, volunteer fireman, and butcher who appeared in a series of plays starring Frank Chafrau, and ended up being one of the iconic characters of the era, as well as one of the inspirations for Bill the Butcher in "Gangs of New York." We remade a Rick Ross song. Now it's about Rick Ross.

One year ago, Rick Ross released "The Devil is a Lie," a single from his Mastermind LP. In it, the rapper proudly proclaims "the devil is a lie, bitch I'm the truth!" This inspired me to create a redux of the song addressing the "Truth" behind Rick Ross' name. [more inside]

Bloodletters and Bad Actors

My look at the early days of Omaha theater, back when it was a frontier town, its amusements were questionable, and vice was rampant, with occasional forays into more recent performing arts misbehavior. [more inside]

Manhunter Vs. Red Dragon

I made a video putting together the Hannibal Lecter scene from Manhunter (1986) and the remake Red Dragon (2006) as a way to compare direction and performance for a scene that is nearly identical in both movies.

Cult TV Times: Old-fashioned long-form journalism for those who love TV

About six months ago, a bunch of journalists (including myself) drunkenly decided we should stop moaning about the lack of good long-form writing in magazines about television and do something about it. Cult TV Times is the result. There you'll find both free content like Sir Mortimer Wheeler - Archeology's forgotten TV hero, and our very first official issue: CTVT #1: Mummy, Can Men Be Prime Ministers Too? - just £2 (about $3) for over 80 pages of content. A Day In The Hood

I started a blog, talking about issues on my street in the North End of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The North End is a high crime area with many transient residents. The blog talks about issues related to crime, infrastructure, slumlords, and lack of City By-Law enforcements. Think South Central LA but Canadian Style. This blogs intention is to expose the inequities between the haves and the have nots in a neighbourhood that goes from the poorest of the poor to some of the richest of the rich.
