Random Recipe Project: A YouTube Channel

I've got about 150 cookbooks that I've collected over the last thirty years but in the age of instant recipes on the internet I hardly ever use them anymore. Last fall, despite not really knowing anything about creating good video, or editing even better video, or how to have a successful YouTube channel, I decided to begin a video series of me cooking one randomly selected recipe from my collection. Guess the AI Jukebox artist

AI Jukebox is a fascinating project from OpenAI that uses cutting-edge neural neworks to perform all sorts of musical magic -- it can take a clip of a song and continue it in a new way, sing text lyrics in any artist's voice, make a song sound like it's being sung by someone else. My favorite? Tell it to generate music by an artist without any other info, and it will produce a gibberish song with nonsense lyrics... that still sounds 100% real and just like the actual singer or band with their unique style. You can hear instruments, melodies, sometimes an audience, the breathing of the lead singer -- but the whole thing is generated completely from scratch by the AI, not with samples or digital sounds. It's not flawless -- some of the songs ramble, with glitchy effects or a mutating voice. But these just add to the vibe, like it's from a dream or a parallel universe. I went through their database to find the best examples of these tracks from the most famous artists, then turned them into an audio quiz on Sporcle -- complete with AI-generated art of the artists I made to serve as hints in the second round. How many of the artists can you name? [more inside]

1,228,178 genetic variants, 2 million years

I have mapped, graphed, and sonified all of the single nucleotide genetic variants which were found in more than one person from human chromosome 22. Genomes were collected and sequenced by the Human Genome Diversity Project, the Simons Genome Diversity Project, and the 1,000 Genomes Project, and were dated by Wohns et al. in A unified genealogy of modern and ancient genomes. The end result is a 5 part, 42 hour video series. [more inside]

Violent Penguin (Series One)

Violent Penguin was a shortlived educational European children's cartoon from the recent past (although the country of origin and original date of broadcast are unknown). Long thought lost, the complete first series has recently re-surfaced on youtube. Created by the popular children's author (and multi-instrumentalist) Toby Vok (best known for the children's classic Spiders Are Wonderful), Violent Penguin ran for seven very similar episodes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), in which the papercraft penguin interacted with plasticine people and taught them all various lessons in less than 30 seconds an episode. Alongside the seven episodes, there are two helpful compilation videos: The Complete Violent Penguin (all seven episodes all in a row), and The Concurrent Violent Penguin (all seven episodes all at once). Vermont FarmCam

In 2006, in a MetaFilter thread about a person in Norway making a time-lapse of the woods behind their house, I said:
"One of these days I will do something similar where I live."
Two months after that comment we bought our little house in the hills of Vermont, and I started playing with my own scenic webcam. [more inside]

This is a teaser video (and so, basically, an ad, but I ask of you... what is an ad? ok fine) which I produced for my day job at Occipital, but I think it's mefi worthy because its the first animated render of this complexity-level I ever did pretty much from scratch (with a lot of help and camera work by my co-worker Karla). Portia Manson's Hippie Dick! in Dirty Looks Volume 4

I contributed an article to the new issue of queer film journal Dirty Looks on Portia Manson/Gene Barnes, who produced six issues of the erotic queer zine Hippie Dick! in the early 90s, made experimental films like Mercury Rising, and died at the age of 31 in 1995 from AIDS-related meningitis. He was the subject of the tribute song R.I.P. by Bikini Kill. (Gene had attended Evergreen College at the time of the nascence of the riot grrrl movement.) [more inside]

Documentary: Frank Lukas - Lines

We just released our 5-minute-documentary about Frank Lukas who collected heaps of memories while getting to the very top in the BMX world today. Now we are telling his story in association with Carhartt. What makes the film special is the mixture of old analogue clips, high quality shots, projections and animations which is pretty unusual for a bike film. It is not just about BMX. It is about a man who followed his dream although there was only a really small chance of succeeding. It is about working one’s way up and not giving up despite all struggles.

Code Review, Forwards and Back

Your team’s code review practices cause ripple effects far into the future. In this play, see several ways a single code review can go, then fast-forward and rewind to see the effects – on codebase and culture – of different code review approaches. Video recording of a 22-minute play about code review, mentorship, tech management, and regret. Premiered on October 6th, 2017 at PyGotham in New York City. Announcement blog post ("it's Run Lola Run but about code review") and wrapup post (audience responses included "I used to be that reviewer and I'm trying not to be anymore" and "I don't code at all but this is a marvelous management parable").

“Can’t Feel Your Pulse”

A medical school music video parody of "Can't Feel My Face" by The Weeknd. (These parody music videos are a thing at med schools right now, and mine is no exception.) Simultaneously kept me sane and drove me crazy while I was learning cardiology over the past few weeks. The lyrics are in the video description on the youtube page. If you have any familiarity with med school, pay attention to the details on screens and whiteboards in the video for additional jokes.

Grants, Fellowships, Internships & Awards Calendar

Last year I submitted the work of a team of volunteer journalists at KBOO in Portland for several journalistic awards. While looking for places to submit work from that team, I discovered the means to apply for awards is very disjointed. Many links offering such opportunities are several years old, meaning in some cases, the organization is no longer making the offering. In other cases, the links are dead because the organization has folded. In still other cases, there is simply a message saying the organization is not taking applicants for the current year.
