Same Rat, Different Hat

The debut record from Out of System Transfer, a neo-old-timey band who sing punk-influenced folk songs about the assassination of William McKinley, hitting cops in the head with a brick, and riding the subway. Their sound has been compared to the Holy Modal Rounders, Mojo Nixon, and Mischief Brew. With physical media sales becoming less viable, it made little sense to get CDs printed (plus, no one in the band even had a working CD player), but it also felt wrong to forego the great potential offered by album covers and liner notes, not to mention the feeling of having a tangible thing for fans to have. Thus, the record was released as a zine, (also bundled with the download as a pdf) with original artwork commissioned for each song by various Brooklyn-based artists. [more inside]

thinkContext: Progressive Browser Extension

thinkContext is a web browser extension which adds contextually relevant, politically progressive information to your web browsing. It works by matching the URL of search engine results, sites you visit or text advertising against a database of progressive campaigns. If it finds a match it inserts unobtrusive icons into the browser. Currently it pulls information from a Union Hotel Guide, an Ethical Restaurant Guide, the Stop Rush Limbaugh advertiser database, The Green Pages, the Bechdel Test Movie database, and the B Corporation directory.

A One-PDF History of European Socialism and Communism

Some friends and I compiled a 500-page PDF that does the following (from the Introduction): "We present here a history of twentieth-century communism through primary sources, divided into fourteen chapters arranged in chronological order. Each chapter deals with a historical moment or theoretical debate, and contains an amount of reading appropriate for one week’s time. We hope that this reader will provide the foundation for seminars and reading groups." [more inside]

Washington, DC Police Tweets

An open-ended research tool for everything that the DC Police Department writes on their twitter feed. The department made the controversial decision to encrypt all radio communications last year, with no allowance for journalists, and thus have devoted more time to twitter. The site allows you to view the last three thousand tweets and quickly analyze factors like age, city quadrant, gender, etc., though a clever regular-expression-based interface.

Oregon Ballot Drop Box Locator

Since the official locator for ballot drop sites in Oregon is pretty hard to find, not super user-friendly, and doesn't work in mobile browsers, I worked with Scott Duncombe at the Bus Project to develop a friendlier site that Oregon voters can use to find the nearest place to drop off their ballots. Locations are provided by Data.Oregon.gov. We're still looking at features to add over the next days/weeks, but the site is live.

Chamomile Tea Party Posters

I had always been interested in the power and intersection of propaganda and graphic design. And World War II was a fertile era for both. So I started to remix old propaganda posters from the era with contemporary messages about the rancor that is prevalent in American political discourse. I have now published 19 of these posters under the moniker of The Chamomile Tea Party. The two most recent posters: Our Latest No Fly Zone and America's 4th Front: War on the Middle Class. Comments always welcomed.

NoTruePatriot.org - Full documentation of the "Digg Patriots" movement

As described by this article, this post, and this comment, the Digg Patriots were an organized corps of conservatives operating out of an invitation-only Yahoo! group for the purpose of gaming social news giant Digg -- suppressing left-leaning content, spamming right-wing stories, and using dirty tactics to harass and ban political enemies. While their exposure made waves online, the lack of concrete evidence raised questions about their very existence. Now, after taking time to redact and format the data, the evidence is here. NoTruePatriot.org documents nearly a year of Digg Patriots activity, 12,900 posts in all, in a sortable, searchable database. Take your time to peruse their posts and judge for yourself the seriousness of their actions. [more inside]
