Chatty Catties

A few years ago, someone asked me for a few thousand dollars to make a movie about his cat. Dear reader, I married that man. And today that movie, Chatty Catties, is available! The movie follows a woman, her cat, and the man that comes between them. It is set in a world where cats can talk to their owners. All of the cats are voiced by deaf or hard-of-hearing actors. You can hear the Seattle Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center talk about that choice here. [more inside]

Swapping time and space

I was curious to know what it would look like if you swapped the time axis with one of the space axes (x or y). I tried it on a random sampling of short black-and-white movies. [more inside]

The Optical — VFX and Movie Tech Podcast

The Optical is a podcast revisiting the history of VFX films and technology, often through the lens of Cinefex magazine. In late 2013, I started a blog to go with an idea that I had for a podcast, to (re)read all of the print issues of Cinefex magazine in my collection, and revisit older VFX movies from the heyday of practical effects. The podcast started in January 2014, and so far, we've released 24 episodes. During that time, I've had the pleasure of interviewing great minds like Douglas Trumbull, Harrison Ellenshaw and John Van Vliet, and Howie Weed. I'm kinda proud that we've made it this far.

Media literacy, and a terrible spoof of "Tomorrow"

We've kicked off the latest season of our YouTube series on media and digital literacy with a spoof of "Tomorrow" from the movie Annie. (OK, so this particular episode isn't really about media literacy... aside from taking the piss out of yet another movie retread.) [more inside]

Film Talk Forum - Smart friendly discussion of the best in Film and Television

I've been looking for a good place for deeper discussion of great films and TV shows. I saw this thread in AskMeFi and checked out the criterion forum, but found it lacking. So I created my own film and TV discussion forum. Please feel free to join and add to the (currently non-existent) conversation. Tell all your film geek friends too. Thanks. :)

We Have Such Films To Show You

So griphus was all "omg there's nine Hellraiser movies?" and I was like "I know, let's do a podcast about 'em!" and that's the story of We Have Such Films To Show You, our new podcast miniseries where we tackle every film in the increasingly-troubled Hellraiser franchise in loving, rambling detail. The first episode is now up; the podcast feed is here. [more inside]

Cold Cat (animated short)

A freezing cat seeks the warmth of a woman, but ends up having to rely on city infrastructure. Along the way, there's a bit of Gangnam Style, a hot-tub scene of sorts, and a very brief bedroom dalliance. [more inside]

Ghosts With Shit Jobs

In the future, jobs still suck - but in whole new ways. By 2040, the economy has flipped and North Americans are a cheap labour pool for wealthy Asian markets. A Chinese documentary show focuses on the "ghosts" (Cantonese slang for white people) unlucky enough to have been born into the slums of Toronto in a special report that translates as "Ghosts With Shit Jobs." Unpresidents' Day

Presidents' Day is when Americans celebrate their most well-known presidents. On Unpresidents' day, we celebrate the lesser-known presidents. To do this, we portray them doing the opposite of what they did in real life. This movie is a documentary of the first-ever Unpresidents' Day celebration.

Drag Me To Hell As Remembered By Bunny and Coco

In Los Angeles last week we discovered we had access to several of the props from the Sam Raimi film "Drag Me to Hell," as well as the locations where the film was made, as well as our friend Abbie Cobb (currently on Beverly Hills 90210), who was Alison Lohman's body double in the original film. So we did what anybody would do. We remade the film from memory.
