No Scary Parts: a browser extension that skips scary scenes on Disney+

No Scary Parts is a chrome extension that skips creepy scenes in classic Disney movies on Disney+. Since the beginning, every Disney film, without fail, has included a weird scene or two that traumatizes generations of kids, from Dumbo's pink elephants to Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain. Currently I have 5 movies supported. If you have a sensitive toddler or don't want flashbacks to your own childhood, try out this extension.

(re) Identify hate groups on GuideStar

GuideStar, a charity data site, started flagging hate groups, then removed the flags after harassment and threats. I wrote a Chrome extension that adds the flags back. Buzzfeed covers the hubub with some discussion of the SPLC's objectivity.

Books for (Washington) DC

As part of Open Data Day DC, I began the Books for DC (aka 'booksfordc') project with the goal of increasing user engagement with the DC Public Library's many wonderful resources. Last month, I wrote a web scraper that publishes a Twitter feed of new additions to the DCPL book catalog. And I just released a Chrome browser extension that lets you know what books and ebooks are available at the DCPL when browsing Amazon, Goodreads, or Barnes & Noble. [more inside]

SoundTalk - Turn forum conversations into playlists

SoundTalk is a Chrome extension that finds song titles in the current page and generates a Spotify playlist. For example, with two clicks it turns this recent Ask thread about ultra sparse music into this playlist. It's different from other tools because it looks for any text that seems like a song title, rather than just finding links to known music services. More playlists and suggested uses below the fold. Tabminder: Stop distracted browsing before it starts

Tabminder is a Google Chrome extension I built to intercept distracted browsing and give me occasional reminders to get back to work. When I open a distracting tab on my blacklist, Tabminder starts counting down from a preset time limit. When time's up, it prompts me to close the distracting tab or restart the timer. It's just annoying enough to keep me focused but not so strict that I can't visit MetaFilter once in a while. It works well in combination with StayFocusd to keep me from wasting my daily distraction quota. [more inside]
